Responsibilities
Performs initial evaluations on patients as prescribed in inpatient and acute care settings.. Diagnoses and treats speech, language and swallowing problems. Evaluates speech and language skills as related to educational, medical, social, and psychological factors. Plans and implements individualized rehabilitative treatment programs to restore communication and swallowing efficiency for inpatients and outpatients of all ages. Administers diagnostic and treatment services. Teaches inpatients and outpatients of all ages and families specific activities, skills, techniques, and exercises that are designed to maximize the patient’s speech and swallowing abilities. Observes and evaluates treatment effect and results. Records patients' activities and progress. Maintains adequate materials, records, and quality controls in accordance with hospital standards. Discusses prognoses with physicians and reviews medical records to determine appropriate plan of treatment.
Education Requirements
Master of Arts or Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Special training, licensure (or eligibility for licensure) by the N.C. board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and the Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Completion of CFY in a medical rehabilitation setting preferred. Current CPR verification.
Minimum Experience, Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements
Speech language pathologist experience preferred. Ability to respond quickly to changes in patient and/or department conditions. Competency in modified barium swallow procedures is preferred. Good knowledge of acceptable medical terminology. Good interpersonal communication skills. Good patient care skills. Good skills in writing clear, concise, timely, and appropriate evaluations, daily notes in patient charts, and correspondence to other professionals. Ability to work with hostile and emotionally upset people while maintaining emotional stability.
