Overview:
The Veterinarian will be responsible for providing oversight and care for research and teaching animals and providing timely updates regarding operations of the Animal Facility.
The Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI) was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases. The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 18 labs, 150 scientists and support personnel, who are supported by more than 85 grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, and pharmacology.Responsibilities:
A day in the life of a Veterinarian at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Provides oversight of the centralized laboratory animal program and facilities.
  • Assures operations of the centralized laboratory animal program are consistent with the Public Health Service (PHS) Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act
  • Monitors all HMH animal research for compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Oversight of care and use of research and teaching animals, including, but not limited to, a program of veterinary care and preventive medicine.
  • Reviews all animal use proposals and facilitates timely approval of all IACUC proposals submitted by HMH researchers.
  • Provides technical assistance, veterinary medical care, and diagnostic service for all animals including the ABSL-3.
  • Provides guidance and assists in arrangements for external consultations in animal study design and diagnostics.
  • Revises, updates and develops policies and procedures for the care and use of laboratory animals, including per diem charges in the Animal Facility.
  • Establishes and maintains the laboratory animal care and use program to achieve AAALAC accreditation.
  • Provide animal welfare data as required for regulatory and granting agency reports.
  • Postmortem examination of dead animals as requested or needed.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • D.V.M. or V.M.D.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine with ACLAM board certification or board eligible with 4 years of professional laboratory animal experience, excluding training.
  • Direct experience with the AAALAC accreditation process.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Employment may be contingent upon successful completion of an FBI background check and other regulatory approvals for admittance to BSL3 facilities and/or select agent facilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
  • American College of Laboratory Medicine Certification.
