The qualified candidate will perform project management functions in collaboration with research engineers and scientists, focused on the Renewable Energy, Emission Science, and Environmental business unit. This unit performs research, development, and demonstrations focused on technology and information aimed at greenhouse gas emission quantification, mitigation, environmental impacts, energy infrastructure integrity, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, procedural review, renewable energy, hydrogen adoption, technology validation and integration.

Work Location

The Strategy & Innovation group is a hybrid team across different time zones. While candidates local to our Des Plaines, IL campus are preferred, this position has been granted approval by the SVP of Corporate Strategy & Innovation to be fully remote.


Primary Responsibilities
  • Detailed programmatic and project management to include overseeing contractual adjustments and compliance, budget management, project scoping, customer interactions, presenting, and report writing.
  • Ability to manage and communicate complex technical and applied research to broad and varied knowledge-based audiences.
  • Experience in federally funded (US DOE and US DOT) projects is preferred.
  • Collaborates with researchers on all aspects of research and development of proposals and projects such as objective or purpose of project, applications that can be utilized from findings, costs of project, equipment, and human resource requirements.
  • Facilitates collaborations with academia, government, and corporations, including coordination with intellectual property legal personnel and technology licensing personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Research interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from energy infrastructure and its operations as well as minimizing environmental impacts.
  • Research interest in natural gas systems and associated industry R&D needs including programmatic support for utilities and government agencies is desired.
  • Work with current and prospective clients to understand their needs, and identify new technical and/or business areas of activity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including writing and delivering technical proposals, reports, and presentations with great attention to details.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus across diverse research teams and clients.
  • Experience managing technical projects and multi-sponsor projects effectively and efficiently with ability to meet project milestones and keep internal/external project teams on track.
  • Adept at predicting project outcomes and re-scoping if necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional results with high customer satisfaction under little or no supervision.
  • Potential for travel for industry events, customer site visits, field demonstrations or testing.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or Science; four or more years in related experience and/or training.
  • Background in natural gas/energy industry operations is preferred.
  • Experience with project management (PMP certification) and multi-discipline collaborative experience preferred.
