Overview

Our model uses two of the most powerful tools for recovery: group therapy and medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine. Our approach takes the best parts of AA/NA (accountability and community) and combines them with the latest medical science and technology. At Groups, our medical providers are a key component of our multidisciplinary care team that also includes substance abuse counselors, office coordinators, patient navigators, and peer recovery coaches.

Responsibilities

As Associate Medical Director you will have both clinical and administrative responsibilities.

Clinically, you will work with a team of medical providers, counselors, and support-staff to provide direct care and medication management for our members throughout their treatment course. You will leverage telemedicine extensively in your work, so must be comfortable with technology and enthusiastic about the benefits of this modality. You will work daily to overcome the barriers faced by members early in recovery. This will require you to adopt a “member-first” attitude that prioritizes keeping members safe, by supporting ongoing engagement in treatment and continuous access to medications. Flexibility, empathy, and commitment to member success are critical attributes for a successful Associate Medical Director You will support your colleagues by providing support when medical questions or needs arise and coverage when other providers are unavailable.

Your administrative duties will include serving as the collaborating physician for NPs and PAs. This will require providing support and education through the onboarding process, completing the required direct supervision, documentation review, and serving as an expert consultant for complex clinical cases. You will coordinate ongoing education for providers in your region and will be an integral part of the regional medical leadership team in developing and deploying new quality improvement initiatives and service lines. .

Clinical Duties & Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all clinical policies and procedures as outlined in the GRS Manual
  • Direct member care duties
    • Determine each member’s medical necessity and appropriateness for treatment pursuant to applicable clinical models, policies and procedures, and manuals (e.g., Recovery System Manual) as required by Groups Recover Together. Prescribe buprenorphine/naloxone and, where appropriate, other approved medications to treat withdrawal symptoms, in a manner consistent with Recover Together’s policies and procedures and the Groups Recovery System Manual.
    • Maintain a panel of ~250 patients and serve as their dedicated provider, reviewing their care plan and medication management at each monthly visit or more often, as necessary.
    • ○ Sign all prescriptions on the same business day that they are generated
    • As necessary, coordinate with community providers to support patients, as necessary
    • Be available by phone/email to discuss patient’s medical issues in between visits
    • When medically necessary, see member’s in individual sessions to review medical progress and provide E&M services.
    • Serve as the medical team’s representative or consulting support for the assigned provider in interdisciplinary care team (INTERCOM) meetings–as assigned by Regional Medical Director
    • Provide regular coverage for “makeup groups” and makeup 1:1 sessions.
    • Provide as needed cross-coverage for colleagues and answers to medical questions when other providers are unavailable or clinical cases are escalated for your review.
    • Participate in rotating “on-call” schedule of urgent prescription coverage for unavailable provider
    • Facilitate access to the State’s prescription drug monitoring database so Groups staff can regularly monitor the Provider’s patients’ access to controlled substances, per Recover Together’s clinical protocols.
  • Medical Records
    • Completing high quality, through and accurate documentation for all medical encounters on the same business day as the encounter and in accordance with policies of the company
    • Maintain patient records in confidence and complete record as required by HIPAA and other applicable federal/state laws, rules or regulations/company policies regarding medical records 
  • Administrative and leadership duties
    • Be an expert on Groups clinical and operational policies, procedures, and manuals. Be able to navigate complex clinical situations and “gray areas” in a manner consistent with Groups’ philosophy and culture
    • Serve as collaborating physician for assigned NP/PA providers. Ths includes completing supervision and documentation review and chart reviews, as required by state specific licensure regulations and company policy.
    • Be available for day to day escalations (via phone or email). Partner with the Medical Director on complex cases, as needed.
    • Perform periodic chart reviews and direct observation of care for assigned providers and follow up with feedback.
    • Complete annual review for all assigned providers and provide feedback on clinical/medical issues and performance management as needed.
    • Assist with onboarding, training, and support of new providers
    • Work with the medical leadership team to pilot new initiatives to improve outcomes
    • Support ongoing trainings, performance improvement activities, and change management activities within region, especially for providers
    • Assist with roll-out of new protocols, workflows, and care pathways.
    • Provide essential middle management of the front-line providers (communication, advocacy, feedback, filtering, etc).
    • Assist with other duties as assigned by medical and regional leadership.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Active MD/DO license in good standing: Florida and Indiana
  • Board certification and appropriate behavioral health or addiction medicine NPI taxonomy (or willingness to adjust current NPI taxonomy)
  • Addiction Medicine board certified or board eligible strongly preferred.
  • At least 1 year of medical leadership or management experience either during or after residency training.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain additional licenses in other states where Groups Recover Together operates (no background issues that could limit state licensing or credentialing).
  • Membership in the Interstate Medical Licensing Compact or willingness to join
  • Unrestricted DEA license with DATA waiver with 275 cap or eligible to increase to 275
  • Willingness and ability to become credentialed with all government and private health plans with whom Groups Recover Together is in network.
  • At least 1 year of experience managing OUD with buprenorphine using a low-barrier philosophy
  • At least 1 year experience working in a team-based-care setting with behavioral health providers (therapists, social workers, case managers, etc)
  • At least 2 years experience working with a similar member population (primarily medicaid, high burden of SDOH, SUD, and mental health diagnoses)
  • Ability to demonstrate recovery-sensitive behaviors, including choice of language, attitudes and interactions with members and staff.
  • Ability to maintain courteous and professional in all communications (verbal and written) with staff and members
  • EMR fluency, ideally with eClinical-Works
  • Spreadsheet and basic data analysis proficiency
  • Access to reliable internet and telephone services, specifically 10M download and 5M upload package or higher, as well as a strong WiFi signal from your remote work location.
