Position Overview:

Responsible for exhibiting Gregory Electric Company’s Mission, Vision, and Values, regarding external customers, agencies, vendors, internal departments, and co-workers. The field mechanic repairs, inspects, services, and maintains cars, trucks, and equipment within the company. The position is based out of Columbia, SC, and travel is required across the state to various job sites as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities are not all-inclusive and are subject to change. The position performs additional duties as requested to meet the priorities and ongoing needs of the organization.

  • Perform preventative maintenance (lube, oil change, replace belts, hoses, inspect brakes, repack bearings, and check tires on all size vehicles)
  • Diagnose and effectively repair mechanical, engine and electrical irregularities/malfunctions on all size vehicles
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment in the field
  • Document all repairs and maintenance in accordance with company systems
  • Run computer diagnostics on engines to determine repairs and probable costs for repair
  • Price and order necessary parts when needed
  • Test drive vehicles or equipment to gauge performance
  • Drive automatic and standard shift vehicles for testing, transfer, and pick-up/delivery of parts
  • Disassemble, repair, and reassemble equipment or parts when necessary
  • Maintain knowledge of hydraulics, diesel, electrical, and welding experience
  • Support safety initiatives using personal protective equipment and application
  • Participate in random drug and alcohol testing that supports Gregory’s commitment to a drug-free workplace

Qualifications and Requirements:

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Requires the ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, technical service manuals, professional publications, directions, instructions, methods, procedures, labels, and gauges
  • Understands equipment set up and grounding
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, use of the Internet, email, programs running diagnostics/work orders
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safety practices relating to equipment and/or vehicle repair
  • Proficiency in the following areas: hydraulics, diesel/gas engines, chassis and suspensions, welding/metal fabrication, and small tool repair
  • Requires considerable knowledge of hazards in vehicle and equipment maintenance and/or repair
  • General knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with supervision, peers, and community partners
  • Requires self-motivation, organization, and prioritization management
  • Must be able to follow Gregory Electric’s safety rules and other company policies

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Technical degree, 1-3 years’ experience, extensive mechanical ability, or a combination of education and/or experience
  • Certifications or experience preferred in the following areas:
    • CDL A
    • ASE certification
    • Freight Liner and/or International certifications
    • Hydraulic maintenance
    • OSHA certifications
    • Utility or construction job experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 60 pounds
  • Capable of wearing PPE: hard hat, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, respirators, safety belt and footwear
  • Perform basic math calculations to include addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and the use of measurements
  • Ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding and related equipment
  • Frequently perform overhead work requiring the use of both hands and securing 30 pounds
  • Possess hand dexterity and strength to operate common hand and power tools
  • Must be able to stand and walk on pavement for prolonged periods of time
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and communicate verbally and in writing with vehicle operators, management, coworkers, subordinates, and outside vendors
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl, push or pull
  • Regularly reaches with hands/arm with full range of motion; uses hands and fingers to hold, handle and feel objects, knobs, keys, and or buttons
  • Performs hand excavation of dirt, rock, concrete, and other natural or manmade material
  • Ability to maneuver on, around and/or under equipment to perform required tasks

Travel Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be fully insured according to South Carolina law
  • Maintain a driving record with less than 6 points
  • Ability to travel within all of Gregory Electric’s territory with or without notice, when required
  • Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
  • Proven ability to operate a vehicle safely and within legal and regulatory requirements

Work Environment:

  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, ice, wind)
  • Ability to work outdoors continuously for 8 to 16 hours per day
  • Noise level is moderate to loud
  • Occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction sites
