Introduction

A Labor and Delivery Nurse provides care for women and their infants before, during, and after birth. A Labor and Delivery Nurse will monitor mothers and infants, provide postpartum care, and educate new mothers about the care of their newborns.

Job Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients in triage for preterm labor, active labor, rupture of waters, pregnancy complications, or co-existing issues
• Fetal monitoring and assessment
• Support and circulate in the operating room for cesarean sections, tubal, and emergency obstetric and gynecological procedures
• Medication administration and immunizations
• Patient education related to medications, labor, pushing, delivering, and postpartum care of mother and baby
• Newborn care and assessment for healthy infant
• Breastfeeding and postpartum support/management
• Provides direct, continuous care for a specific caseload of patients through application of the nursing process - based upon theory, research, and approved Department of Nursing and institutional standards
• Perform other duties as assigned

Labor & Delivery RN Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)
• Current New York State RN license
• BLS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) from American Academy Pediatrics
• IV certification
• Phlebotomy
• Two plus years experience as Labor and Delivery Nurse
