Job Summary:

This position is responsible for providing quality psychiatric care to patients of the Oyáte Health Center (OHC) commensurate with training and licensure.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the practice of psychiatric medicine involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services to patients.
  • Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons; conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
  • Develops treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
  • Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; and supervising staff provision of services.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
  • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results.
  • Records physical findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition.
  • Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
  • Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
  • Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
  • Assures preparation of appropriate medical records for all patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data to provide comprehensive medical care. Ensures accurate information is documented within the patient’s electronic health record.
  • Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.
  • Works closely with allied health professionals in the provision of broad health program services. Interviews and examines patients. Instructs and counsels patients.
  • Actively participates in clinic quality improvement activities.
  • Participate in meetings and represent OHC as required.
  • Utilization of EHR with accurate timely notes to ensure required documentation is entered for billing and referrals.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Provides clinical oversight.
  • Performs related duties.

Requirements

Supervisory Controls

This is in a senior management position or an advanced clinical professional that received administrative direction from their supervisor with assignments in terms of broadly defined goals or functions. The employee usually has responsibility for independently planning, designing, and carrying out programs, projects, studies, or other work. Results of the work are considered technically authoritative and are normally accepted without significant change. If the work should be reviewed, the review concerns such matters as fulfillment of program objectives, effect of advice and influence on the overall program, or the contribution to the advancement of technology. Recommendations for new projects and alteration of objectives usually are evaluated for such considerations as availability of funds and other resources, broad program goals, or established priorities.

Guidelines

Guidelines include state and federal laws and regulations, OHC policies and procedures, OHC Medical Staff Bylaws, professional standards of medical practice, medical standing orders, and Centers or Medicare and Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation manual. These guidelines are not applicable to every situation encountered and require independent judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

Complexity/Scope of Work

The work includes varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and methods that are applied to a broad range of activities or substantial depth of analysis, typically for an administrative or professional field. Decisions regarding what needs to be done include major areas of uncertainty in approach, methodology, or interpretation and evaluation processes that result from such elements as continuing changes in program, technological developments, unknown phenomena, or conflicting requirements. Positions with this level of complexity include advanced clinical professional positions.

The work involves performing patient care duties. The purpose of this position is to deliver the highest quality of care to patients. Successful performance results in quality care and improved patient outcomes.

Contacts

The personal contacts are with individuals or groups from outside the organization in a moderately unstructured setting. For example, the contacts are not established on a routine basis and the purpose and extent of each contact is different. Contacts are typically with clinical providers, patients/family members, employees, community resource agencies, various Health Departments, Tribal Health programs, and the general public.

Contacts are primarily for obtaining, furnishing, exchanging, and providing factual medical information.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items; or driving an automobile. The employee must be able to read, write, speak, and hear.

The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, including exposure to contagious diseases. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or masks.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

This position is a first level supervisor and is usually responsible for the work performance of

This position assigns work to subordinates, adjusts workflow to maintain balance among positions and meet priorities or deadlines, and makes minor changes in structure, methods, or procedures as necessary to accommodate changes in work pattern, emphasis, or capability. The employee carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing

complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited medical school and successful completion of post graduate training and an approved psychiatric or family medicine/psychiatric residency program.
  • Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine from any US State or Territory.
  • Board certified or Board eligible in psychiatry within three year of residency training
  • DEA licensure.
  • Must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal and background check and a pre-employment drug screen.

Native American/American Indian Preference in hiring will be applied as defined in title 25 usc 44-46 &474.
