Great Plains SPCA is searching for a Part-Time Shelter Veterinarian who will provide first-class medical care to shelter animals as a member of the Shelter Medicine Team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality diagnostics and best medicine to shelter and foster pets, staff pets, and post-adoption appointments
  • Perform spay and neuter, dental and other surgical procedures
  • Practice veterinary medicine in a manner compliant with the State Veterinary Practice Act, Federal and/or State Controlled Substance laws, along with appropriate medical record documentation; ensure the team maintains complete medical records that meet practice quality control
  • Promote the safety of pets, clients, staff and volunteers by ensuring the Shelter Medicine team is utilizing safe restraining techniques, Fear Free techniques, following standard practice guidelines, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and laboratory
  • Maintain drug logs in accordance with DEA, DOA, and Kansas Veterinary Board
  • Provide excellent customer service and support to our adopters, fosters and staff through effective communication, education and compassion
  • Collaborate with other veterinarians and vet technicians to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care and exceptional client service.
  • Maintain and ensure all medical notes and logs are kept up to date through established protocols; assist team in follow-up and future management of the patient.
  • Stay up to date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine, attend Continuing Education trainings.
  • Collaborate with and support other departments, including but not limited to Adoptions, Animal Care, Behavior, Foster, HERO, and Admissions.
  • Positively represent the shelter in the professional community and to the general public.
  • Maintain control of medicinal and surgical supplies
  • Provide on-call coverage on a rotating basis to assist with after hours (until 9:00 pm) and weekend emergencies

Qualifications

Education/License Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Kansas
  • Current, or eligible for, DEA license
  • Competent with computer functions and programs such as Internet and web-based programs, Microsoft Office, Excel, and PetPoint

Work Conditions:

  • Must be comfortable working with all types of animals
  • Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels
  • Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100lbs
  • Lift 50lbs to waist height
