Wilson College is in search of an empathetic, innovative, and forward-thinking individual with an inclusive approach to serve as the Chaplain for the Wilson College community. The Chaplain will offer pastoral guidance to the students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni within the Wilson community. The main responsibilities of this position are centered around worship leadership, pastoral care, and spiritual formation. The Chaplain will collaborate with various stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and community leaders, to establish a welcoming and supportive community committed to personal growth and service to others. This is a full-time, 10-month position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Worship

  • Provides leadership in the worship life of the Wilson college community, by organizing, implementing and coordinating participants in weekly worship; providing resources for same; and incorporating a variety of liturgical styles consistent with the interests and needs of the community.
  • Leads in creating, coordinating, and implementing special worship services, such as Christmas Vespers, and Baccalaureate services, and participates in other special events such as Orientation and Leadership weekends.

Pastoral Care

  • Provides pastoral care for students, faculty, staff, administration, and alumni.

Spiritual Formation

  • Works to build an inclusive and welcoming community that embraces the rich diversity of God’s creation and the call to dialogue with one another.
  • Teaches, leads, and supports small group study such as Bible Study, prayer, and exploration of religious and moral questions.
  • Participates in selection and supervision of the Curran Scholars and students who volunteer with local organizations.
  • Coordinates all areas of Sarah’s Cupboard, the on-campus food pantry for students. 
  • Serves as a resource and leader for student volunteers working in the larger Chambersburg community. 
  • Connects students with local churches, agencies and programs to engender community connection and service.
  • Plans, coordinates, and evaluates special community service projects, such as the Fall Retreat and Alternative Spring Break

Service to the Larger Church

  • Serves as the key liaison between the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Wilson College, ensuring the continuing Covenant relationship between them.
  • Maintains relationship with the governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), specifically the Presbytery of Carlisle, and the Synod of the Trinity, by active participation in the life of the larger church.
  • Encourages inter-relatedness between college and community through relationships with local congregations and clergy.

Service to the College and Chaplaincy Program

  • Consults with the Dean of Students regarding issues affecting students, while respecting the constraints of confidentiality.
  • Cultivates and maintains a broad financial support base for the chaplaincy program, through donors, grants, and other sources of funding, providing for future programming and student needs.
  • Publicizes, encourages, and supports the mission of Wilson College to the larger community of churches, agencies and individuals.
  • Collaborates with Counseling Center with support groups; for example Grief Support

Administration

  • Administers budget and finances for the entire chaplaincy program; follows the guidelines for the Helen Carnell Eden Foundation.

COMPETENCY:

  • Demonstrates initiative and willingness to work interdependently as part of the Student Development team.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; exhibits excellent interpersonal abilities with a great sense of humor.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Ordained or eligible to be ordained minister of the Word and Sacrament, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and be a minister member in good standing of PC (USA).
