Grand Central Bakery is Hiring a Pastry Lead Near Seattle, WA

Grand Central Bakery is now hiring a Pastry Lead to bake our handcrafted mouthwatering pastries! The Pastry Lead’s role is an integral part of the efficient, enthusiastic team that makes Grand Central Bakery’s vibrant cafes such wonderful spaces to be in. Grand Central aims to be the best part of the customer’s day by providing delicious pastries and excellent customer service.

The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic baker and skilled communicator. The Pastry Lead acts as an ambassador from the Commissary Pastry to the cafés and from the cafés to the customers.

Please note that this position will assist café staff with customer service, order fulfillment, and other café duties during the standard hours of operation.

Location: 1607 N 45th St., Seattle, WA 98103

Rate of Pay: This position pays $18.30 per hour, plus $7.00 - $9.00 per hour in tips. New hires are excluded from the tip pool for the first five (5) training shifts.

Schedule: Full-time, est. 5 days a week. Schedule flexibility required, including weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Communicates effectively and often with the café team to disseminate relevant information, as well as filter feedback and questions up to the Café Manager
  • Leads new hire and ongoing training, provides additional expertise on pastry baking operations and sourcing and product information
  • Responsible for specials and new product roll out
  • Helps troubleshoot and cover pastry shifts when possible
  • Responsible for all equipment used in the baking area, including maintenance, cleanliness, and training
  • Ensures high quality food and maintains GCB standards by sending feedback and communication regularly to Commissary team
  • Serves as a visible and reliable leader with a positive presence, and can effectively motivate the team
  • Makes delicious pastry in an efficient manner by consistently mixing, forming, proofing and baking pastries
  • Employs different communication methods (written, in person, electronic) daily to maintain clear and timely communication to include product feedback and education to both staff and customers
  • Maintains preparedness by organizing workspace, managing inventory, and stocking and ordering as needed
  • Sets and maintain standards to produce high quality delicious pastries-communicate these to all Pastry Bakers and hold them accountable

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English required
  • Maintains food handler’s card – new hires are expected to have a valid card by their first date of work
  • HS diploma/GED preferred
  • Basic math skills required
  • 2 year(s) professional pastry experience preferred
  • Must demonstrate regular attendance by coming to work on scheduled working days and being on time
  • Must display professionalism and personality with customers
  • Management and training experience a plus
  • Willing and able to cover shifts at different cafes

Physical Requirements

The Pastry Lead is expected to stand for 100% of the shift worked. This position walks up to the equivalent of two miles per shift and is expected to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires participating in procedures that require a high level of repetitive motion involving the hands, wrists, arms, and back.

The position involves working with heavy equipment including Hobart mixers, rack ovens, and reach-in freezers. Pastry Leads work in a bakery and are constantly exposed to wheat flour dust and other grain dusts (rye, corn, oat).
