JOB SUMMARY:

The successful Director of Automation Engineering leads an interdisciplinary team designing robotic automation systems used primarily for machined part manufacturing. The Director of Engineering has three focus areas.

• Drive engineering best practices across all engineering disciplines. Ensure that all engineering teams operate efficiently and effectively delivering complete, high-quality automation systems on time and on budget.
• Practice real continuous improvement. Allocate resources to stay abreast of the current state of the art across all our engineering disciplines. Exploit those technologies that further our objectives.
• Develop an engineering leadership team that learns from mistakes and builds on successes in a systematic, measurable way.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead a team of engineers responsible for the robotic automation system design. Ensure they have the tools, time and training to execute high quality designs on budget and on time.
• Bring a systematic, process driven approach across engineering disciplines. Measure key performance criteria such as:
  • Quality
  • On time delivery
  • Performance to budget
• Implement tools (software, hardware, training, etc.) to improve design quality/efficiency.
• Foster open, constructive communication across the automation division. Work equally hard to eliminate circular debate and decision paralysis.
• Create/drive a culture of continuous improvement across engineering teams and across the division.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• Outstanding team builder, ability to bring highly skilled engineering teams together to arrive at optimum technical solutions quickly. Demonstrated long term success leading/building technical teams.
• Outstanding communicator, ability/desire to mentor, train and coach highly skilled engineers.
• Deep modelling, MRP and PDM knowledge, intensely systems driven.
• Working knowledge of mechanical systems, controls engineering and plc’s, familiarity with industrial robots and CNC machine tools.
• Outstanding manufacturing process knowledge.
• Curious and enthusiastic about how things work and how to make them work better.
• Deep commitment to continuous improvement technically and operationally.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primarily an administrative office environment with exposure to customer facility manufacturing operations and Automation shop floor assembly work cells. Peek work periods and stress due to customer project deadlines. Extended viewing of a computer monitor using engineering software. Travel by plane and vehicle.
