AIM (Advocate, Intervene, Mentor) is an intensive mentoring and advocacy program serving adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 who are on juvenile probation or at-risk of out-of-home placement as a result of a Family Court disposition. The Mental Health Clinician provides individual child and/or family therapy for children and youth receiving services in the AIM program. This position provides comprehensive assessment and treatment to address identified personal, behavioral or family issues, using a strength-based, youth and family development approach.

Location: 692 Blake Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11207
Hours: 10-15 hours/week
Major Duties of the Mental Health Clinician: • Meet with each participant in the AIM program a minimum of three times in the first two months, to conduct trauma screening, a biosocial assessment, and a mental health screening.• Provide effective coaching, teaching and modeling to allow for the de-escalation of a crisis and provide for processing of crisis situations.• Refer participants to external mental health services providers as appropriate, and coordinate and collaborate with such providers to ensure a high level of service care as needed and appropriate.• Meet with parents/guardians of AIM participants as needed, to provide one-time or ongoing counseling and support services, including referrals to external service providers if needed.• Track and record all required information.• Regularly coordinate with the Program Director, providing updates on participants’ cases and sharing case notes.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Mental Health Clinician Qualifications: • LMSW or equivalent certifications required.• At least three years’ experience in family and child welfare and/or related systems. • Good basic knowledge of AIM’s target Brooklyn neighborhoods (East New York, Brownsville, Flatbush, and Bedford-Stuyvesant), and the resources and supports available to young people in these communities.• Personal experience with the probation system preferred.• Ability to relate to a wide variety of program participants and staff.• Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills.• Must have a commitment to work from a strength based and/or youth development perspective.• Bilingual preferred.
