The incumbent performs high complexity laboratory functions to obtain data for use in infectious disease and/ histocompatibility evaluations of potential deceased and living donors for the purpose of transplantation.

Essential Job Functions:

1. The incumbent performs high-complexity laboratory testing:
   1. Prepares specimens, reagents, and instrumentation for testing and/or storage
   2. Maintains patient and donor confidentiality per HIPAA requirements and Gift of Life Michigan policy
   3. Maintains accurate documentation of all laboratory responsibilities
   4. Responsible for performing, analyzing, and reporting results for the following tests according to established procedures (may also assist in the interpretation of test results):
      • Immunohematology (ABO typing)
      • Hemoglobin A1C testing
      • Manual EIA testing
      • Nucleic acid testing
      • Chemiluminescence
      • Histocompatibility testing (HLA typing)
      • Flow cytometric crossmatching
      • Solid-phase antibody testing
      • Point of care testing (Urinalysis, CBC, Coagulation, and Blood chemistry)
   5. Identifies and troubleshoots factors that may adversely impact test performance or reporting of test results
   6. Performs quality control measures
   7. Responsible for initial review of results and release of preliminary reports
   8. May be responsible for secondary review of results and release of final results as indicated by experience
   9. Participates in external proficiency testing programs
   10. Participates in the laboratory and Gift of Life Michigan quality assurance programs
   11. Assists in providing 24/7/365 availability of essential laboratory services for deceased donor organ procurement. Must be available on assigned days/nights outside regular work hours to take call and perform testing and reporting of results without direct supervision
   12. Performs preventative and general maintenance for laboratory work areas, equipment, and instrumentation
   13. Maintains proficiency in all software programs used in the laboratory and/or Gift of Life Michigan
   14. Maintains inventory of supplies.

Qualifications

1. The incumbent must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
2. A minimum of 1 year of recent relevant clinical laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
3. Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent, Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (ABHI), and/or Specialist in Immunology (ASCP) is preferred, but not required.
