Gerber Construction is Hiring a Health & Safety Specialist Near Lehi, UT

General Summary

The Health & Safety Specialist is located primarily in Gerber Construction’s Lehi office and is responsible for assisting the Health & Safety Manager with planning, developing, and coordinating the occupational health and safety components of personnel, materials, equipment, and work environment in a manner consistent with mandated regulations and company policies for all Gerber employees and projects.

Reports to: Health & Safety Manager

Required Education & Experience: AA/AS or BA/BS in a Health & Safety-related or Business/Management program and 5 years of safety experience in the construction industry (experience may be partially substituted for the education requirement)

Required Certifications: OSHA 510/500 (Authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor) and Red Cross FA/CPR/AED Instructor (must have before hire date or complete these certifications within six months after hire date)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Site Visits / Audits (30%)

  • Conducts project site visits and audits ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures, customer/owner requirements, and federal/state regulations.
  • Ensures all required posting and signage are on site and kept updated consistent with regulations.
  • Monitors site safety communication to maintain effectiveness such as daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, activity hazard analyses, signage, warning lines, and danger zones.
  • Meets with project supervisors to discuss/recognize the project’s safety accomplishments, observations, and needed corrections.

H&S Program/Plan Development/Updates (20%)

  • Assists with managing the Gerber Health & Safety Program, Policies, and Procedures and the Employee Health & Safety Handbook
  • Assists with managing the company Hazard Communication Program including Safety Data Sheets, container labeling, chemical inventory, and employee training.
  • Assists with managing all OSHA/UOSH required plans/programs including, but not limited to: Respiratory Protection; Confined Spaces; Personal Protective Equipment; Crane Operator Training & Certification; and Fall Protection.
  • Assists in the development of Site-Specific Health & Safety Plans for all projects including emergency information and project contact postings for display on site.

General H&S Department Management (20%)

  • Assists in ensuring all regulatory agency recording and reporting requirements are met (e.g. OSHA 300, 300A, 301).
  • Assists in managing the company communication and training application (e.g. Tyfoom).
  • Assists in managing special projects and programs (e.g. Company COVID-19 Management Plan).
  • Assists in managing the company alcohol and drug random testing program for CDL personnel and general employee population.
  • Assists in the development and submittal of various reports to company leadership (e.g. the Safety Department Weekly Report, the Safety Committee meeting minutes and recommendations).
  • Leads and manages the activities of the company Safety Committee.

Meetings – Company/Staff/Project (10%)

  • Attends/participates in or leads various meetings and committees (e.g. Company Safety Committee, Company Weekly Staff Meetings, Monthly Department Head Meetings, Project Weekly Staff Meetings, Tyfoom Steering Committee, Pre- and Post-Construction Meetings, Project Site Daily Safety Briefings, industry safety committees)

Health & Safety Training (12.5%)

  • Assists in the development, delivery, and tracking of health and safety training to comply with regulatory agency regulations, such as OSHA and UOSH.
  • Coordinates with and assists Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen with required personnel health and safety training.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of health and safety training as part of the company’s new hire orientation and onboarding program.
  • Assists in the assessment of the need for (and the development/delivery of ) additional or refresher training in response to deficiencies in personnel knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Assists with the coordination/management of the company Summer Conference and the Conference’s health and safety training components (instructors, topics, curricula, etc.)

Manage Employee Incident and Vehicle Incident Cases (2.5%)

  • Assists with the management of all employee injury and vehicle incidents including (as necessary):
  • rapid response to incident location;
  • obtaining reports from on-scene law enforcement;
  • transportation of employee to an occupational medicine clinic;
  • accompanying employee during the medical exam/evaluation;
  • ensuring an Initial Incident Report is completed and submitted by the employee’s supervisor;
  • completion and submittal of claims to the company’s insurance carrier; and
  • management of the case in coordination and cooperation with the company’s insurance adjuster, case nurse manager, etc.

Manage Return to Work (Light-Duty) Program (2.5%)

  • Assists with the management of employees with work restrictions due to a job-related injury in coordination and cooperation with the occupational medicine clinic and/or attending medical professional.
  • Assists with ensuring that such employees are assigned to a specific supervisor, instructions as to the work and their restrictions are understood and adhered to, and daily reports of their activities and current health status are completed and submitted by the specific supervisor.

Incident Investigations and Reporting (2.5%)

  • Assists with the management and documentation of all incident investigations, including: injuries to company or subcontractor personnel, property damage, and company vehicle-related incidents.
  • Assists with the development of recommendations and/or implementation of corrective actions as an outcome of an investigation.
  • Assists in ensuring all regulatory agency reporting requirements are accomplished and documented.
