About the role:

This is a unique opportunity to help build a brand-new User Experience team in the Global Manufacturing IT space. This team will be focused on designing the user experience for the many applications that power our manufacturing plants. Building vehicles is at the core of GM's business and this person will have an opportunity to be a part of bringing our plants into the electric future we're all striving for.

As a UX/UI Designer, you will collaborate with other designers, researchers, developers, product owners, and business stakeholders to craft meaningful experiences for our customers through thoughtful design. The ideal candidate will have interaction and visual design skills, an understanding of user-centered design, and a passion for designing digital products. This role embodies a passionate, yet pragmatic design leader that can analyze customer needs and behaviors, identify problem solving opportunities, and successfully transform requirements into intuitive and elegant user experiences.

Responsibilities:
  • Design user-focused wireframes, hi-fidelity mockups, interaction models, specifications, style guides and prototypes that elegantly illustrate a deep understanding of the user's needs
  • Build strong relationships with IT and business partners to ensure the user is well represented in the product development cycle
  • Develop personas, user workflows / story boards and logical information architecture
  • Ensure compliance with all standards of usability, design best practices and accessibility
  • Contribute design expertise and knowledge to pattern library
  • Participate in workshops for journey mapping, brainstorming, vision sessions, and requirements gathering
  • Research design trends and forecast future experiences
  • Foster collaboration among teammates and evangelize the need for brand and application consistency
  • Help recruit and interview top tier candidates for open positions and embody the high standards of the team
  • Take ownership and create personal professional growth objectives and find ways to achieve them

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 3 years of experience creating user interfaces, digital products, or complex software applications
  • Formal degree or training in HCI, Product Design, Interaction Design, Visual Design or equivalent
  • Open to feedback, knows how give and receive criticism, and how and when to defend design decisions
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills
  • Mastery of common design tools like Figma, XD, Axure, Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • Comfortable with blank-slate initiatives as well as on-going established projects
  • Attention to detail and passionate problem solver with critical thinking skills
  • Experience working on cross functional, multi-disciplinary teams of designers, developers, project owners, and business stakeholders
  • Proven track record of working with technically complex systems and on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Understanding of i18n, localization best practices, and WCAG accessibility standards
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating a history of creating user-centered designs that illustrate the ability to turn requirements into creative solutions
  • Exemplary interpersonal, presentation and written communication skills; able to effectively communicate designs, ideas, and concepts to teams, IT & Business partners, and influence key stakeholders
  • History of championing and evangelizing UX best practices and design patterns, as well as firm working knowledge of usability principles and techniques
  • Flexible in navigating projects within Agile and Waterfall development methodologies

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Prototyping experience (software development experience a plus)
  • Experience with usability testing
  • Innovative data visualization skills
  • Graphic design experience
  • Experience with contributing to the development of a design system
  • Strong agile experience
