POSITION SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, designs, fabricates, repairs, and improves tools, jigs, fixtures, simple molds, gauges and dies to the tolerances required for the intended manufacturing processes. Works from CAD drawings, sketches, models or instructions. Plans work to be accomplished by using the most economical methods and proper machines. May assign machining of specific parts to Machinists and provide drawings or sketches for own or other’s use in producing subassembly components. May assist Management in scheduling work and/or provide direction to other staff members, serving as a group leader on projects when required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Designs, constructs, maintains, repairs and improves manufacturing tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs or dies for use in the overall manufacturing process.
· Performs assignments that range from the use of ordinary tool room operations to performing work involving accurate relationships and extremely close tolerances.
· Reviews and discusses project needs, goals and objectives with applicable employees.
· With the input received from employees, use CAD software to develop project drawings.
· Plans project construction procedures and methods, using available resources.
· Lays out, fabricates and assembles tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs or dies by analyzing drawings, sketches, models and engineering or company specifications.
· Performs precision work to exacting tolerances and dimensions as dictated by the project requirements.
· Recommends revisions in designs and/or substitutions in material based upon project requirements.
· Solves problems relating to unusual material, work-holding requirements, machine settings, fabrication methods and production processes.
· Works directly with applicable employees to implement the introduction and use of tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs or dies in the manufacturing process.
· Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
· Works within 5S methodology to maintain workplace to a high standard.
· Conducts benchmarking studies to determine best practices/designs and future trends.
· Undertake continuous training and development.
· Be actively involved in continuous improvement activities to support the achievement of departmental and company objectives.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
· Demonstrated skill and proficiency with Windows-based computer applications (specifically Word, Power Point, Outlook and Excel Software) and CAD/CAM system software.
· Ability to listen and communicate clearly, fluently and diplomatically orally and in writing in the English language; also to maintain excellent interpersonal and cooperative relationships with management, staff and clients.
· Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and accurately follow through on work activities with time constraints and interruptions to meet deadlines as well as to work independently with a minimum amount of direction and/or supervision.
· Ability to remain flexible, resilient, calm, maintain a sense of humor and to regularly present a well-groomed, professional image.
· Ability to work effectively and respectively with staff, managers, executives and others with a variety of working styles to achieve accountability and results and maintain service excellence.
· Ability to meet the physical and mental requirements of the essential job functions
· Regular, consistent, punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.
· Working knowledge of lean manufacturing techniques as applied to the manufacture of the company’s products.
· Ability to become a licensed forklift operator.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
· CAD/CAM software programming experience (i.e. Mastercam, solid works, etc.)
· Vertical CNC Mill programming, set-up and operation.
· Lathe programming, set-up and operation.
· Experience using measurement and hand tools required in CNC machining.
· Inspection experience using optical comparator and CMM.
· Ability to design and build machine and weld fixtures for production use.
· Familiarity with appropriate metals and materials used in fixture construction.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Trade school or apprenticeship program preferred.
Experience: Five years of factory-related, tool and fixture maker experience. Combination of work experience and education will be considered.
Computer Skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, ERP programs and CAD/CAM software.
