Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK is Hiring an Education Reporter Near Savannah, GA

The Savannah Morning News is seeking an education reporter with the awareness, reporting and source-building skills, courage, and sensitivity to cover one of the most important beats in the newsroom. As a watchdog, storyteller and public servant, the reporter will confront disparities with vigor, remain dogged in the quest for ambitious solutions-journalism and constantly look beyond data to humanize the most pressing issues facing the local school districts and universities.Research shows us how hard it is for K-12 students to catch up when they fall behind, and the effects those lags have on their abilities to thrive during school and afterward. On the university level, with Savannah State University, Georgia Southern University and the Savannah College of Art & Design in our coverage area, financial burdens and stresses related to education and entering a struggling workforce have increased dramatically. It is important we tell these stories with short- and long-term content that resonates and helps us grow our digital audience. Candidates must have the skill to bring these complex topics to the living rooms of families across all demographics. The leading candidate will have a proven track record of reporting interest in covering issues of social and journalistic importance. The candidate should have at least two years of reporting experience, although not necessarily specific to this subject area.We are not looking for a reporter to sit in meetings all day. We are looking for a journalist who can help make a difference in our community. Our coverage is a mix of classroom happenings, behind the scenes in district offices and in homes. It’s also about the role that nonprofits, government agencies and others play in helping local children and families.Candidates should be able to show examples of their strength in reporting and writing. They should also be able to use visuals and digital elements to strengthen their stories and be comfortable using social media to help share their stories and engage with readers. We are looking for someone who can find and tell good stories that make an impact in the community and with our readers. If this is the kind of journalism you want to do, get in touch.
