Our core teams in New York City, Los Angeles, and DC are joined by a growing network of directors, editors, composers, designers, journalists, developers and others all around the world. Together, we’re building the kind of media company we all want to work for: curious, experimental, and ambitious. What you’ll do

  • Commission Writers: Recruit new writers to join our pool of freelancers. Duties include, but are not limited to: identifying and recruiting established talent, inviting subject matter experts to contribute guest columns, and searching for upcoming and emerging writers.
  • Build Systems: Build an internal system and process for tracking freelance writers, their assignments, and contracts, as well as build a database of trusted freelance writers on topics integral to the mission of Freethink and Big Think.
  • Collaborate: Work with our publishing team and editorial leadership to ensure that freelance writers are contributing written pieces in key topic areas for our publications, coordinate with designers on our publishing team to ensure high-value freelance articles have premium art associated with their pieces, and work with video teams to explore synergy between upcoming video releases and potential articles written by freelancers.
  • Branded Content: Work with editorial leadership, publishing, and sales to ensure that branded written content tasked to freelancers gets completed on schedule and on budget.
  • Content Management & Quality Control: Upload articles into the CMS, edit them for quality, and copy edit freelance pieces for grammatical and stylistic errors.
  • Team Player: Assist the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor with other editorial-related duties, including stepping in when editors are absent and performing other assigned tasks.

What You’ll Need

  • 7 years of experience in journalism with an ability to cover a wide range of topics.
  • Preferably an academic background in something other than journalism or communications.
  • Extreme, almost obsessive attention to detail.
  • Flexibility working with freelance writers, staff writers, and editorial leadership across different time zones.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, quickly growing startup and learn quickly.
  • Unparalleled verbal and especially written communication skills.
  • Love of our type of journalism — intelligent, thought-provoking, often uplifting, and the exact opposite of the cynicism and partisanship that drives mainstream media outlets.

What You’ll Get Out of this Opportunity

  • Collaborative culture and mentorship in a startup environment.
  • The privilege of learning about the smartest ideas from the smartest people in the world.
  • Growth opportunities within a fast-growing company.
  • Competitive salary and benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability Insurance, 401(k), Commuter Benefits, Mobile Phone Stipend, and more!
  • This is a remote, work from home position.
