Franjo Construction is Hiring a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Near Pittsburgh, PA

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be responsible for the inspecting, servicing, and maintaining our range of heavy-duty construction equipment. The right candidate should have proven and successful experience working with heavy machinery, diagnosing, adjusting, replacing faulty parts, and repairing damaged equipment parts. The right candidate will also be responsible for performing preventative maintenance on heavy machinery and other related handling equipment. This position is expected to work within a 90-mile radius of the city of Pittsburgh, and will be an employee of the Pittsburgh, PA office location.

What you’ll do:

  • Responsible for performing preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy machinery and other related handling equipment.
  • Examine vehicles to determine the extent of damage or malfunctions.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heavy equipment (excavators, skid loaders, telehandlers and general vehicle and heavy truck repair). 
  • Small engine repair and small tool maintenance.
  • Read and understand hydraulic schematics and electrical wiring diagrams to determine repair procedures and parts needed. 
  • Conducting routine and preventive maintenance inspections, including tune-ups, lubrications, oil changes, that identifies worn and damaged parts and complete the necessary repairs. 
  • Read, understand, and apply information from technical manuals, prints, schematics to plan and perform work procedures. 
  • Utilize checklists to ensure accuracy and completeness of parts examined and repaired (belts, spark plugs, brake, and fluid systems). 
  • Perform regular inspections to ensure that machinery complies with local, state, and federal regulations. 
  • Set up and test-drive trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Repair, reline, replace, and adjust brakes.
  • Review work orders and discuss work with supervisors.
  • Test and adjust repaired systems to meet manufacturers’ performance specifications. 
  • Confer with operators and truck drivers to determine extent of vehicle problems and the work to be performed. 
  • Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear using micrometers, calipers, and gauges. 
  • Maintain logs of intended and completed repairs on all equipment.
  • May travel to job sites repair heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • May work overtime and be assigned non-mechanic duties by the Shop Manager/Lead Mechanic. 
  • Additional tasks as necessary and/or assigned.

What you’ll need to be familiar with:

  • Ability to read and understand hydraulic schematics and electrical wiring diagrams and have a working knowledge to determine proper repair procedures. 
  • Intermediate to advance level mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Certification by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), preferred but not required. 
  • Able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • CDL B is required, willingness to obtain a CDL A over time is preferred.
  • Ability to perform physical work; lifting 25 to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds on occasion.
  • Good driving record.
  • Must work well with others.
  • Ability to create and maintain PM logs.

Your success story:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in heavy mobile equipment repair including working on electrical systems, hydraulic systems, gearboxes, heavy duty drive and brake systems.
