Forest Hills Community House is Hiring a Director of LGBTQ Teen Services Near Forest, NY

Status: Full-Time 

Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000 annually 

Schedule: 35 hours/week, 10 am – 6 pm with occasional night or weekend hours

Location: Forest Hills Community Center

Queens Community House (QCH) provides networks of programs for children, youth, and, older adults throughout the diverse population of Queens. Our mission is to provide individuals and families with the tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities. Queens Community House provides both direct service as well as community outreach and education programs in our LGBTQ Teen Services division. Generation Q (GenQ) is an LGBTQ Drop-In program for youth ages 13-18 years. GenQ is our long-standing youth-lead, youth-serving program located in Forest Hills. LGBTQ Teen Services also provides robust training and outreach to the Queens community, and beyond, for adults who work with and care for LGBTQ youth. This outreach and training work includes education, cultural competency, and policy training for DOE schools. In addition to the large network of schools we support, we also provide education and training on best practices in LGBTQ youth services for other non-profit and for-profit institutions, anti-bullying training for students, and parental support and education for parents. We collaborate with and support several GSAs in area schools in this work. 

The ideal candidate is a driven leader who is experienced in program design and development, community engagement, management and supervision practices, and well-versed in LGBTQ issues and best practices. The Director of LGBTQ Teen Services should be passionate about advocating for and with LGBTQ youth, and compassionate to those who are learning best practices. A well-established knowledge of NYC DOE, as well as the neighborhoods of Queens, is a plus.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and develop the LGBTQ Services program portfolio based on funder requirements, best practices, and emerging needs, while growing the scale and impact of all LGBTQ Teen Services provided by QCH in collaboration with the Associate Executive Director for Youth Services.
  • Hire, train, and manage all LGBTQ Teen Services staff. This includes regular supervision and direct support for staff and program participants as needed. Additionally, the Director is responsible for the professional development of all program staff including the GenQ Program Coordinator, Training and Outreach Coordinator(s), and Interns
  • Provide overall management and supervision of day-to-day operations of all LGBTQ Teen Services as well as program content
  • Create and maintain effective systems to track program goals, progress, and compliance for all LGBTQ Teen Services to ensure adherence to all policies, guidelines, and contractual requirements as dictated by either QCH, our regulatory partners, or funding requirements. Ensure accurate record-keeping and timeliness of all documentation. Regularly review data to inform program priorities.
  • Project Management for LGBTQ Teen Services events including Queer Career Panel, Autumn Outfest, and collaboration with QCH’s Queens Center for Gay Seniors (QCGS) for Queens Pride Parade
  • Serve as the primary contact for stakeholders in Queens and the larger New York LGBTQ youth services networks, funders, and local electeds and develop those relationships 
  • Collaborate with the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and LGBTQ Older Adult Services staff on advocacy efforts related to the LGBTQ community
  • Develop and maintain an LGBTQ Teen Advisory Board for QCH, with support from the CEO and CSO, that engages thought partners, leaders, and possible funders in our direct service work and advocacy efforts. The Advisory Board should engage and expand our network of stakeholders and our influence in LGBTQ Services networks in NYC
  • Maintain and develop strategic institutional partnerships including the NYC DOE, NYS DOH, local schools, CBOs, and interagency programs. Maintain and develop collaborative relationships with QCH colleagues, as well as all relevant internal and external stakeholders (funders, schools, participants, parents, neighborhood organizations, etc.). Leverage these relationships to accomplish program and agency goals.
  • Manage the LGBTQ Teen Services' overall budget. This includes monitoring purchases and inventory of all program-related expenses, timely payments, petty cash utilization and monthly reconciliation, and other fiscal responsibilities related to the program’s budget
  • Maintain timely and consistent communication with supervisor, direct reports, funders, colleagues, and other key stakeholders. Regularly check and respond to email requests, phone calls, and messages, with a quick turnaround time
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies ensuring proper protocols, documentation, follow-up, as well as assessment, and, when necessary, adjust protocols; procedures; and expectations. Perform conflict mediation and crisis intervention as needed
  • Serve as a senior leader within the Youth Services division and support the Division as needed

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in a youth and/or community-based program 
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Public Health, or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; bilingual candidates are preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of ages
  • Commitment to inclusive, multicultural programming; prior experience working within coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions

PREFERRED skills/experience/qualities: 

  • Knowledge of behavioral health integration and LGBTQ affirming positive youth development practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues, needs, and interests of LGBTQ youth, adults, families, and communities, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues
