About the Department The Section of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy consists of five full-time faculty with comprehensive expertise in surgical treatment of complex vascular diseases. Working with colleagues across the enterprise, our faculty has helped established several robust centers with the aim of holistically treating patients with vascular disease, including the Center for Aortic Diseases, the Center for Venous Disease, as well as the Joint Commission/American Heart Association-accredited Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, the first of its kind in Chicago. The section is also home to one of the first accredited vascular ultrasound laboratories, which is staffed by a team of board-certified imaging technologists.
The section's research initiatives center on patient outcomes following complex vascular surgery. The section also manages a robust fellowship program aimed at educating and preparing the next generation of vascular surgeons. This ongoing work and achievement would not be possible without the cohesive effort of the faculty and staff. Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APN or PA) in the Section of Vascular Surgery will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, using advanced clinical skills and knowledge to provide assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management, and other direct care to patients under the care of the University of Chicago Medicine. This position will support our Podiatry program and ambulatory practice at our Hyde Park campus.

Responsibilities

Patient Evaluation and Diagnosis

• Conducts thorough patient assessments, including medical history reviews, physical examinations, and specialized foot and ankle evaluations.

• Formulates differential diagnoses based on clinical findings, laboratory results, and diagnostic imaging.

• Collaborates with podiatrists and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive treatment plans.

Treatment and Management

• Performs and assists in various podiatric procedures, including wound care, nail care, injections, and minor surgical interventions.

• Assists in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive surgery and performs all roles in Podiatric peri-operative management.

• Assists in call coverage for the Podiatric service.

• Performs hospital in-patient assessments and consultations.

• Participates in our Diabetic Limb Salvage program.

• Holds own independent clinics and assists in faculty clinics.

• Prescribes medications, orthotics, and assistive devices as appropriate.

• Monitors patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and provide follow-up care.

Patient Education and Counseling

• Educates patients on self-care measures, preventive strategies, and treatment options.

• Provides clear and concise explanations of medical conditions, treatment plans, and self-management techniques.

• Offers guidance on lifestyle modifications, footwear choices, and preventive measures.

• Addresses patient concerns, answer questions, and ensures patient understanding of their condition and treatment.

Documentation and Collaboration

• Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical histories, examination findings, treatment plans, and progress notes.

• Collaborates with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.

• Communicates effectively with referring physicians, specialists, and other healthcare providers.

Quality Improvement and Professional Development

• Stays updated on current podiatry practices, emerging research, and evidence-based guidelines.

• Participates in professional development activities, including conferences, workshops, and continuing education opportunities.

• Contributes to quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, and best practices in podiatry.

Other

• Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.

• Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• An advanced degree (or equivalent, if license received prior to July 1, 2001) from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA).

Experience:

• Clinical experience in a related area of specialty.

Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse:

• Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. 

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:

• Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.

• Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.

Preferred Competencies

• In-depth knowledge of podiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of foot and ankle conditions.

• Proficiency in performing podiatric procedures, wound care, and minor surgical interventions.

• Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
