The Volunteer Coordinator will work with the Manager of Volunteer Engagement to ensure that the Volunteer Program is developed and maintained in a way that supports the work and mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. The Volunteer Coordinator will ensure that each volunteer is treated with respect, is valued, and works in a safe work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Foster a welcoming, productive and safe environment where volunteers are treated with respect and feel valued.
  • Represent the Food Bank in the community through volunteer project summaries and recruitment presentations.
  • Competently present the mission of the organization, including the ways we serve the community.
  • Obtain and apply knowledge of handling procedures for salvage, product repackaging, produce and egg sorting, food drive sorting, and food safety quality control standards and regulations per Feeding America and governing authorities. Ensure effective and complete implementation of all standards and regulations.
  • Orient and instruct both large groups of volunteers, as well as individuals, incorporating appropriate education to increase awareness of hunger issues.
  • Work with Manager of Volunteer Engagement and Manager of Food Partnerships to develop volunteer project priorities.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all repacking project areas, and serve as a material manager for the VSD, which entails ensuring enough usable pallets and bins are available and organized; combining pallets to save space; etc. Also, perform tasks and complete documentation related to the master cleaning schedule as directed by the Volunteer Services Manager.
  • Formally and informally recognize branch volunteers and their contributions to the Food Bank. Work with the Volunteer Services team to plan and execute volunteer recognition events.
  • Coordinate projects for individuals participating in the Court-Appointed Community Service Program in the branch.
  • Serve on the Food Safety Committee for the branch. This includes conducting monthly inspections of the facility.
  • Train other Food Bank employees in the Volunteer Services Department on running projects and warehouse practices as these employees begin work with the Food Bank of CENC.
  • Serve as a driver to work off-site projects or shuttle supplies to other branches when needed.
  • Unload trucks associated with incoming volunteer project product when needed.
  • Participate in weekly Volunteer Services Department conference calls.
  • Coordinate daily activities with the Volunteer Services employees and other branch staff.
  • Obtain all necessary material for volunteer activities, including product and supplies.
  • Provide training and support on volunteer management software.
  • The work schedule for this position is Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm, with some weekends an evenings.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma; some college coursework is preferred
  • Clean driving record is required as some travel is necessary
  • Strong verbal communication skills; public speaking skills preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Customer service skills; customer service experience preferred
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Believe in the mission of the organization and represent the Food Bank professionally
  • Leadership skills and experience are preferred
  • Forklift Certificate is preferred, although on the job training is provided

The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, or walk, reach with arms and hands, climb, and balance, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to work in an office and warehouse setting.
  • Must be able to spend at least 65% of the day standing and walking on surfaces such as concrete and ground.
  • Frequently, the employee will be required to drive an automobile.
  • The employee will be required to interact with Food Bank personnel in the warehouse(s). In doing so, the employee will occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Warehouse can be extremely cold at times and extremely hot during the summer months.
