Flexdecks Inc is Hiring a Machine Shop Manager Near Houston, TX

Description

Machine Shop Manager ensures that material processing departments productivity meets or exceeds efficiency and company quality standards. In addition, the Machine Shop Manager supports entire manufacturing team through developing and maintaining a cohesive team and ensures that the departments facilities, machines and equipment, and processes conform to FlexDecks quality standards.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversee material processing area. Supervise and leads material processing team in the execution of fabricating quality aircraft maintenance platforms.
  • Leads material processing departments portion of daily morning meetings. 
  • Review work status & assign tasks to material processing personnel based on daily production schedule. Conduct safety talks and provide company updates.
  • Analyze and interpret engineer drawings, specifications, 3D models, manufacturing aides and job orders to enable assigned employees to perform assigned tasks effectively and efficiently. 
  • Determine and establish sequence of operations for each job order, based on production schedules, work orders and estimated labor hours required for job completion. Adjust process and priorities to meet production schedules as needed. 
  • Develop and implement machining programs, select tooling, tool list and setup sheets. 
  • Evaluate tooling, fixturing, programming and personnel requirements for each job order. Ensure material processing personnel understand the requirements for each assigned task to ensure job orders are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Oversee equipment to determine safe and operational, perform repairs as needed and report malfunctioning and/or unsafe equipment to management.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance checks and/or general machine upkeep. 
  • Maintain and update department equipment log and coordinate departments preventative maintenance checks and services schedule.
  • Evaluate technical issues as they arise; Identify and investigate root causes, formulate a plan and implement solutions to resolve any problems as needed. 
  • Train personnel in proper equipment operations and maintenance. 
  • Coordinate the requisition of departments consumables, supplies, fixturing and tooling.
  • Assists QA / QC Inspector, as required, in quality check of components processed to ensure they meet company quality standards.
  • Confirm correct materials flow in and out safely and are labeled by appropriate project.
  • Maintain workflow to fulfill project objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Report progress, performance, initiatives, issues and challenges to Management as appropriate.
  • Determine if corrective actions are needed in order to meet project objectives, and work to have these implemented.
  • Manage the completion of departmental processing lists and routers by material processing personnel. Ensure each list / router is updated with current status and performance metrics and are submitted daily for Management review.
  • Apply knowledge of machining techniques, advise and provide technical support to material processers and other personnel as needed. 
  • Assist overall production effort in following existing, as well as continuously improving, material flow and departmental organization.
  • Assist Management in identifying, developing, implementing, and tracking process improvement initiatives.
  • Actively participates in daily production status coordination meeting with peer departmental managers as well as operations level management.
  • Foster a cooperative and informative relationship among the material processing team; develop a team-work atmosphere. 
  • Be actively involved in material processing personnel management, including but not limited to hiring, setting expectations, professional development/training, determining and implementing disciplinary corrective actions, if needed, with Management approval. 
  • Monitor and track the material processing teams time entry through the time clock system. Review and approve PTO requests. Review and edit job numbers and classifications where necessary. Submit to Management for review prior to sending to payroll department. 
  • Provide performance appraisals of material processing team personnel. 
  • Monitor and enforce all company safety policies and procedures. Identify and correct any and all safety violation.
  • Maintain a clean organized work environment free of unprotected hazards.
  • Familiarize and understand all FlexDecks’ employment policies such as work hours/days, quality standards, drug/alcohol screening, safety guidelines, and all policies outlining employee behavior at FlexDecks’ facility. 
  • Familiarize, understand, and use all standard operating procedures determined by FlexDecks’ and equipment manufacturers in relation to use of fabrication / processing equipment.
  • Apply all safety measures when working in the shop and with machines / power tools.
  • Interpret and understand dimensions, material types, and material grades on cut lists or drawings.
  • Ensure that product standards, both quality and quantity are met.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and further develop and maintain a cohesive team-oriented work environment with all employees, vendors, and customers, and support the company in all decisions.
  • May be asked by management to perform other tasks beyond those listed.

Requirements

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 

  • Proficient skill and experience required to mechanically operate, calibrate, and adjust mechanical aspects of vertical milling equipment as needed.
  • Skill and experience required to perform preventative maintenance on mechanical portions of vertical milling equipment, i.e., follow established machine maintenance schedules detailing daily, weekly, monthly, and annual preventative maintenance checks and services:
  • Removing debris and chip byproducts.
  • Inspect and replace parts associated with equipment clamps and fixtures.
  • Understand end mill and drill bit types, materials, coatings, etc.
  • Ability to research and choose best tooling for particular jobs; quickly change tooling in the turret, manage different setups, and track and improve tool life.
  • Understand coolant and what it does; monitor and address fluid reservoirs, lubrication points, and pneumatic lines.
  • Perform corrosion prevention and control.
  • Maintain clean hazard-free work area. 
  • Skill and experience to troubleshoot / detect mechanical malfunctions and perform basic equipment repairs:
  • Troubleshoot by using common knowledge, manuals, and access to technical support.
  • Diagnose and Service mechanical and electrical components:
  • Sensors, encoders, spindle, and pneumatic lines, etc.
  • Skill and experience to detect non-conforming / out-of-tolerance parts and determine appropriate mechanical adjustments within the equipment’s accepted operating parameters to produce quality parts. 
  • Proficient knowledge and experience operating EluCAD or other CAD / CAM programs.
  • Proficient knowledge and experience operating CNC vertical milling software, i.e., creating or editing programs to manipulate tool paths, plunge depths, feed rates, and correlate available tooling to required machining processes to produce quality parts.
  • Knowledge and experience processing material of different material types and grades, i.e., carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum (6061 / 5052, etc.,).
  • Additional knowledge of various fabrication tools, types, and methods for use and preventative maintenance and repair desirable but not required: 
  • Manual mill, manual lathe, press break, and sunrise / ironworker.
  • Knowledge of precision measuring instruments i.e. calipers, indicators, and scales. 
  • Knowledge of common electric / pneumatic power tools and their safe operation.
  • Knowledge of common processing tools and material handling equipment related to material processing: Shear, Punch / Ironworker, Overhead Cranes, Forklifts / Pallet Jacks
  • Ability to not only understand work instructions and engineering drawings, but also comprehend the design intent conveyed through those documents.
  • Ability to complete material related paperwork, document daily equipment runtime, and record equipment related notes.
  • Ability to keep inventory of replacement parts required to operate and maintain vertical milling equipment, as well as submit replacement part requests. 
  • Ability to handle raw material, operate material handling equipment, and load material onto vertical milling equipment.
  • Ability to maintain an extremely clean and organized work environment.
  • Correctly store un-processed raw material in designated areas.
  • Correctly remove material processing byproducts and detritus. Dispose in designated areas. 
  • Correctly store equipment accessories, consumables, hand tools, measuring instruments, and completed parts in designated areas. 
  • Ability to receive and understand specific instructions and carry out those specific instructions to completion.
  • Ability to communicate in English required, both written & verbal skills.

Education & Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent.
  • Certification(s): Documented training certification(s) for operating, maintaining and programming CNC vertical milling / profile machining equipment; certification(s) do not need to be equipment brand specific, but documented experience and knowledge must be applicable to VMC equipment.
  • Experience: Four plus (4 ) years’ operating, maintaining and programming CNC vertical milling equipment. Specifically, the processing of aluminum and steel wrought alloy tubes and channels of various thicknesses and material grades.
  • Significant demonstrated leadership experience with a broad knowledge of general construction. 
  • Veteran/Military experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.

Additional Requirements:

  • Willing to work possible overtime & weekends.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Willing to undergo drug/alcohol and background screens in accordance with local laws and regulations. 
  • United States Work Authorization Required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Performance of duties for this job requires work in an open machine & fabrication shop production area. Will work with and around moving machinery, including but not limited to forklifts and over-head cranes. Will be exposed to dirt/dust, fumes/odors. Noise levels range from moderate to loud but tolerable
  • Position requires work in temperatures, as well as humidity, that fluctuate in accordance with the season. Must be able to work in the elements and inclement weather conditions. 
  • Appropriate Personal Protection Equipment is required in all fabrication shop areas including but not limited to Hearing, Eye Protection, Hard Hat and Safety Shoes. 
  • Must have the ability to stand for long periods of time as well as, sit, kneel, crouch, stoop & crawl. Walking for long distances & ascend/descend stairs is required within the office and shop areas.
  • This position requires turning the head and torso, reaching, grasping, bending and flexing the arms, waist, legs, wrists, fingers, as well as functional hearing, vision, and voice (English).
  • This position also requires ability to safely lift and handle up to 50-80 lbs.
