Promotion Qualifications: Candidates must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows:
Either 1: two years as a Rehabilitation Assistant 2, Rehabilitation Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), Occupational Therapy Assistant 2, or Physical Therapy Assistant 2 AND a bachelor's degree in a human service field* or NYS licensure as a Registered Nurse;
Or 2: one year as a Rehabilitation Assistant 2, Rehabilitation Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), Occupational Therapy Assistant 2, or Physical Therapy Assistant 2 AND a master's degree in a human service field.*
Open-Competitive Qualifications: Candidates must possess one of the following:
Either 1: a bachelor's degree in a human service field* AND two years of post-bachelor's qualifying experience;**
Or 2: a master's degree in a human service field* AND one year of post-bachelor's qualifying experience;**
Or 3: a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling.
* Human service field includes disciplines related to the following: addiction studies; child and family studies; communication disorders; community health; education; gerontology; health administration; human services; nursing; nutrition; occupational therapy; physical therapy; psychology; recreation therapy, including art, dance, drama, and music; rehabilitation counseling; social work; and sociology.
** Qualifying Experience: You must have professional experience providing vocational, psychosocial, or rehabilitative/habilitative services in an agency primarily serving individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities, mental illness, or addictions. Internship experience does not count if it was credited toward the qualifying degree.
Duties Description As a Rehabilitation Counselor 1, you would provide a full range of rehabilitation/habilitation services to consumers, including psychosocial, competency training, and residential rehabilitation services, and such vocational services as evaluation, training, counseling, placement and support, and special employment programs.
