JOB SUMMARY:

The Ophthalmic Technician will offer exceptional customer service to all patients and perform a variety of patient care activities to assist physicians which may include complete preliminary eye exams, gathering medical records and patient information , taking ocular measurements, both anatomical and functional, administering or preparing medications, providing eye care, contact lens, surgical suite information to the patient, maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instruments and assisting the ophthalmologist in basic procedures.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

1. Experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry

2. High school graduate or equivalent, with one to two years experience in an ophthalmic practice, medical field, and/or customer-service/sales industry. Completion of ophthalmic technician training and certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) preferred, but not required at the time of hire. Must be willing to attend job-related seminars and/or classes and work Saturdays and evenings on a rotating basis. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus. Ability to refract strongly desired.

3. Must be able to perform refractions within one year of hire.

4. Must be certified in CPR within one year of hire.

5. Self-starter and the ability to learn quickly.

6. Some knowledge of medical and/or ophthalmic terminology strongly desired.

7. In alignment with practice (including surgical suite) mission statement.

8. Understanding of Modernizing Medicine EMR software within 90 days of continuous employment.

9. Must be able to assist in lifting wheelchair-bound patients into exam chair if needed.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Technician duties- Performs and records preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to the measurement of patient’s auto-refraction, manual refraction, corneal curvature and patient's axial length, distance and near vision utilizing pinhole and PAM, patient's visual acuity via PAM, patient's intraocular pressure using applanation, tonometer and tonopen, When appropriate, performs diagnostic ultrasound, IOL Master, HRT, visual field testing using Goldman and Humphrey testing procedures and uses corneal topography. Demonstrates knowledge of the indications and basic interpretations of tests being performed. Records medical and ocular histories. Assists physicians with minor surgical procedures, performs pre/post-operative instructions and consultations, instills eye drops, and administers medications. Screens patients for conditions excluding ocular examination.

2. Patient Charts- Technicians must demonstrate accurate and thorough scribing ability, only using approved abbreviations. All patient health information must be filled out correctly and updated according to company policy, Medicare and AAAASF guidelines.

3. Scheduling- Must be able to schedule triage-phone patients accurately. Must schedule and input appointments in ModMed according to specific criteria set by physicians and according to current policy.

4. Telephone Triage- Must fill out triage phone sheet completely and follow current procedure when analyzing patient triage information. Must have strong ability to accurately diagnose patient information. Assists administration in phone counseling.

5. Optical- May assist optometrist with processing and verification of contact lenses on a time available basis as determined by clinical/OR manager. Instruct patients on the proper techniques used in caring for, inserting and wearing contact lenses.

6. Inventory Control- Stock exam and testing rooms with all necessary pharmaceuticals, samples and general supplies.

7. Equipment- May maintain all equipment used including, but not limited to slit-lamps, lensometer, keratometer and tonometers. Sterilize and set up instruments for in-office ophthalmic surgical procedures as required.

8. Personal Development- Attends seminars and participates in continuing education courses pertaining to areas of specialty and new development within clinical procedures.

9. Sales/Marketing- Must demonstrate the ability to educate and present sales/marketing materials on all elective refractive procedures and products offered by the Practice.

10. Extra Duties- May be required to assist in the training and development of new employees. Perform other related duties as deemed necessary.
