The Lutheran Center (national office) is located in Chicago, Illinois. A staff of 400, under the leadership of the Presiding Bishop, serve as administrators, advisors, conveners, partners, and resource people for the ELCA and its ministries. Staff lead the work of national, domestic, and global ministries and programs including Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA World Hunger, Service & Justice, Christian Community and Leadership, and Innovation. We are also home to five of our separately incorporated ministries: The Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA, Women of the ELCA, Lutheran Men in Mission, the ELCA Foundation and the ELCA Federal Credit Union.
The Office of the Treasurer manages the financial, business and information technology affairs of the churchwide organization. This position is part of the OT-Finance-General Accounting team. This position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day accounting tasks within the general accounting team. This position is responsible for general accounting processes and principles, including auditing, reconciliation of accounts, processing audit workpapers, revenue integration process and other basic accounting functions.
This is a full-time, regular, hybrid (Chicago-based), exempt position. This position has responsibilities that will require being in the Lutheran Center office as needed for trainings, meetings, work with auditors, etc.
1. Prepares general account analysis and reconciliations including cash, intercompany, credit card expense coding and bank fees among others. Actively collaborates with other employees to resolve reconciling items.
2. Daily review and input of cash transactions.
3. Preparation of journal entries, and invoice requests.
4. Generates and reviews daily revenue integration process. Works with the Controller and gifts processing team to solve errors.
5. Performs daily Expense Report Audits
6. Internal & External Audit related tasks.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree required. Accounting degree is preferable. 1 years of accounting, reporting, analysis/related work experience preferred – nonprofit experience desirable.
2. Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.); Workday experience a plus.
3. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
4. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with the ability to clearly communicate issues and solutions with different levels of the organization; ability to pay attention to detail.
5. Willingness to learn new things.
6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse team environment.
7. Appreciation for the mission, vision and values of the ELCA.
Physical Effort
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone. This position requires sitting for long periods of time. Employee will occasionally need to lift boxes or materials up to 15 pounds. Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum: $49,753.60.
