Job Description

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibility:
Transplant Genomics Inc. (“TGI”) is a molecular diagnostics company committed to improving organ transplant outcomes with non-invasive serial monitoring guided by genomics. TGI’s product portfolio of both individual and combined blood gene expression and dd-cfDNA testing is capable of reliably detecting subclinical kidney rejection and acute rejection in kidney transplant patients with stable kidney function, in addition to a new application for liver transplant patients that guides and controls the optimal dose of immunosuppressants.
The Research and Development Director is primarily responsible for the leadership, development, optimization and validation of innovative methods in transplant diagnostics by utilizing technologies based on molecular, proteomic and/or bioinformatics approaches. 

Essential Job Duties:
• Establish program direction and provide strategic direction, leadership, supervision and technical guidance for projects and Research Scientists in the relevant programs.
• Work closely and effectively with other senior commercial and scientific leaders to ensure that R&D projects are progressing and milestones are achieved pursuant to organization and/or client timelines
• Manage performance of assigned laboratory scientists and support staff and ensure program productivity and efficiency
• Communicate effectively with both internal and external clients regarding scientific issues/projects
• Write verification/validation reports and SOPs in accordance with established guidelines
• Maintain and enhance R&D laboratory resources (facilities, equipment, and reagents)
• Ensure project cost objectives are met and communicated
• Serve as both a leader and team member on various ongoing and future new test idea generation projects• Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with the laboratory operations team to allow effective, coordinated assay transition from the R&D phase to clinical/reference laboratory applications
• Develop an effective working relationship with Regulatory Affairs/Quality Assurance to assure R&D projects are in compliance with established guidelines for documentation, quality and safety
• Recruit and hire a sufficient number of qualified and trained laboratory assistants to maintain and support R&D activities
• Conduct regular individual meetings with R&D Scientists that focus on execution of their respective responsibilities and project priorities
• Communicate program objectives to cross-functional teams (clinical laboratory, commercial and regulatory teams)
• Maintain current knowledge of advances in pertinent scientific fields, as well as knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations germane to molecular and diagnostic laboratories, through attending lectures, seminar, professional conferences and courses
• When appropriate, identify and develop training programs for R&D Scientists and dedicated staff
• Prepare presentations on the topic of current R&D activities for national/international scientific meetings
• Prepare manuscripts on the topic of current R&D activities for publication in high-quality peer reviewed journals
• Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications

Essential; Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Advanced degree in microbiology, immunology, biology, biochemistry or a related field is required; PhD required
• At least 3 years of experience on assay development, validation and transition to a clinical environment required
• Expertise and experience in biochemistry, molecular biology/genomics, or immunology assay development, verifiable through patents, publication or description of completed projects required
• Extensive experience and demonstrated accomplishments in diagnostic testing and related fields with an emphasis on advanced, innovative and industry-leading approaches.
• Technical expertise as well as team and program leadership experience will be required.
• A strong understanding and background in laboratory medicine, especially diagnostics used to guide clinical actions, such as treatments, the choice of drugs or drug combinations
• Minimum of 3 years of management or team/program leadership experience. Demonstrated proven experience in managing complex projects, ability to succeed even with challenging projects, appreciation of priorities and critical factors.
• Substantial technical writing experience: protocols, study reports, regulatory communications and manuscripts
• An innovative and prepared mind to identify and protect unique intellectual properties is a bonus
• Commitment to and track record of high quality of work
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other groups
• Goal oriented, with excellent time management and organizational skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in an organization
• Excellent verbal & written communication skills

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT:
Individual’s primary workstation may be located in the laboratory or manufacturing floor where the noise level is low to moderate. The average temperature of work location is 20 °C.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
On an average day this position requires the ability to:
• Clearly see and focus on objects at close and far distances with good depth perception.
• Talk or hear (95-100% of working hours or continuously)
• Sit, use hands to handle or feel (80-94% or essentially); reach with hands and arms (50-79% or frequently)
• Stand, walk, lift up to 25 pounds (10-49% or occasionally)
• Climb or balance up to one hour; stoop, kneel, or crouch, (1-9% of working hours or infrequently). 

Other Notable Physical Requirements: 

• Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead
• Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting
• Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
• Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
• Must be vaccinated against the novel COVID-19 virus variants or provide proof of approved exemption.
