Eric and Jane Nord Family Director's Fellowship in European Painting and Decorative Arts
The departments of European Paintings and Sculpture 1500-1800 and Decorative Arts seek assistance with projects relating to the permanent collection. The first part of the internship (four weeks) involves assisting the Curator of European Paintings and Sculpture, 1500-1800 with creating a series of six to ten rotations from the museum's renowned collection of 18th and 19th-century British and European portrait miniatures. The intern will revisit and research previous rotations, making and implementing suggestions for improvement resulting in the reintroduction of portrait miniatures into museum galleries.
The second part of the internship (six weeks) will be to work on online interpretation under the supervision of the Curator of Decorative Arts. The collection online is crucial in making the Cleveland Museum of Art accessible to as wide a public as possible. Each museum object has a record in the museum database linked to the online collection that should include interpretation: a 60-word Digital didactic and a 10 to 15-word "Did You Know" fact. This project would involve organizing existing curatorial files on objects in the collection of 18th-century French decorative arts and drafting online didactics based on the files. The successful candidate will have some knowledge of 18th-century French art, a good reading knowledge of the French language, possess excellent writing skills, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
By the end of the internship program, the candidate will produce a checklist, and revamp didactics, for six to ten rotations of portrait miniatures, complete organizing existing files on 18th-century French decorative arts, draft interpretation for 18th-century French ceramics, silver, and gold boxes (the 60-word Digital didactic and the 10 to 15-word "Did You Know" fact), process the curator's comments, and insert the texts into Athena. The number of records will depend on the candidate's writing skills.
During the internship, the candidate will learn to use the museum's Athena software, to write in the style of museum interpretation, learn more about 18th century decorative arts, and acquire essential teamwork skills.
