Equitas Health is Hiring an Associate General Counsel Near Columbus, OH

POSITION SUMMARY:Reporting to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel provides secondary management of the Equitas Health Legal Department. The Associate Geneal Counsel will serve as a generalist attorney providing legal and regulatory compliance counsel to business units across the organization including but not limited to human resources, medical center, pharmacy, IT, and facilities. Particularly, the Associate General Counsel will be responsible for oversight of the organizations contract management and will be the go-to for employment related matters. When necessary, the Associate will work with outside counsel on referred matters. The position is responsible for regularly exercising independent judgment, discretion and initiative. The selected candidate will be passionate about Equitas Health’s mission and will strive to advance the mission, vision, and values to internal and external stakeholders. SALARY:$132,000-$165,000 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, exercising legal and professional judgment; traveling, driving or having reliable transportation; written communication; relationship building; utilizing a computer for typing and research; attending meetings; and presenting to small groups.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide Legal Advice. Provide legal advice to Officers and management, including assessing compliance/legal risks and identifying and interpreting applicable laws and regulations, including those related to privacy, Medicare, Medicaid, Ryan White and other government programs, Federally Qualified Health Center compliance, fraud and abuse, physician self-referral and anti-kickback laws. Escalate high-level or high-priority legal advice to the General Counsel for review. 
  • Contracts Management. Review, negotiate, and approve all contracts at Equitas Health. Play a significant role in simplifying contracts of general application. Appropriately delegate contracts to internal or external subject matter experts when appropriate. Negotiate with vendors to ensure favorable contracts for Equitas Health. Ensure finance approves each contract (when necessary) and signatories review, approve, and sign all contracts. Communicate contract monitoring plan with employee responsible for contract. Appropriately store contracts in a way that makes them easily accessible to employees searching for them. Improve the contract management process as necessary (i.e., workflow revisions, business owner training, etc.)
  • Human Resources/Employee Relations. Advise and provide training to Human Resources and leadership on employee relations and labor matters including but not limited to reasonable accommodations, FMLA leave, administering disciplinary action, employee classification, conflicts of interest vetting prior to and during employment.
  • Character & Reputation. Must have a strong sense of independence and work in the organization’s best interest, both inside and outside the organization. Inside the organization, must maintain the credibility and trust with the CEO, Officers, and Senior Leaders and Staff.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • Health law and/or healthcare compliance certification preferred. 


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and other Qualifications
:

  • Must have at least 5 years of in-house experience preferably in serving a community based health care setting or health care organization or health law firm experience. 
  • Experience managing high volume and continuous flow of vendor contracts (negotiating, redlining, finalizing).
  • Experience with operationalizing a legal department processes and workflows in a health care setting. 
  • Superior communication skills in both written and verbal presentation, including all aspects of legal writing technique and procedure, and the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-lawyers. 
  • Experience in providing high level legal advice to health centers and federal and state grantees, including experience in fraud and abuse, physician self-referral, anti-kickback, privacy, billing and reimbursement, and patient care issues. 
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to develop a rapport with all employees at all levels in order to cultivate an environment conducive to reporting possible legal and policy violations. Ability to competently follow through on investigating such potential violations. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills a must. 
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision, including the ability to complete projects in a timely manner in a fast-paced and changing environment with multiple priorities and objectives.
  • Knowledge and experience with the diversity of the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community required.
  • Must have sensitivity to, interest in and competence in cultural differences, HIV/AIDS, minority health, sexual practices, and a demonstrated competence in working with persons of color, and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community. 
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and other computer applications required.
  • Must have reliable transportation and valid Ohio driver’s license.
