Description/Ad:Dedicated to discovering causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of disease, Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC/EPC) is improving human and animal health and lives worldwide. One of seven NPRCs funded by the NIH, ENPRC conducts studies that make breakthrough discoveries possible. Learn more at http://enprc.emory.edu The Colony Management Unit at the Emory National Primate Research Center’s Field Station at Emory University has an immediate opening for a highly motivated and qualified Manager, Research Laboratory who, under minimal supervision, can plan and coordinate activities related to managing the breeding colony and research support, while balancing supervisory and administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have previous supervisory experience, experience managing one or more projects, a good working knowledge of the management of animal breeding colonies (especially nonhuman primates), as well as data and analytical skills. The Colony Management Unit is responsible for monitoring the social stability and social health of captive group-housed rhesus macaques and sooty mangabeys at the Field Station. The Field Station is a dynamic work environment where success is dependent on multi-unit collaboration. Collaborate. Innovate. Serve. If you are someone with previous supervisory experience and a good working knowledge of the management of animal breeding colonies, especially nonhuman primates, this is an amazing opportunity to indirectly save and change lives and make a positive impact in the science and research community. JOB DESCRIPTION: • Supervises staff (generally ten or more employees) in a large and/or complex research laboratory. Responsible for administrative, financial, staffing and planning aspects of research. • Designs instrumentation, theoretical models, equipment and other vehicles for data gathering and analysis. • Designs and applies scientific and numerical models in research. • Oversees development and integrity of data collection and instruments. • Conducts on-going, periodic and final analyses of data, using specialized techniques and programming. • Writes and collaborates with other researchers on manuscripts, abstracts and other publications of research findings.• Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plan for overall research. Performs related responsibilities as required.• Maintenance of the behavior observation reliability program by ensuring all observations and data recording are performed according to departmental protocols and arranging regular assessment• Ensuring data are uploaded and cleaned; Analyzing these data to maintain dominance hierarchies for social groups• Maintaining colony records and databases, performing some data entry, pulling necessary data for reporting purposes, and performing analyses• Weekly coordination of activities related to identification and transfer of potentially suitable animals for research assignment• Development of seasonal schedules for colony procedures, including survey, breeding socializations, and associated activities; responsible for weekly updates to these schedules as needed• Participation in weekly and monthly meetings related to the management of the colony Please note:Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • A bachelor's degree in a scientific field; related master's degree preferred.• Five years of professional research experience. Three years of supervisory experience.OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Participation in colony planning meetings; thus, the most successful candidate will have excellent verbal and analytical skills.• Prior experience working in a research, clinical, or zoological setting is preferred.• Prior experience with behavioral observation methods is required.• Prior experience with Microsoft Access and Excel, as well as analysis software (e.g., RStudio, SPSS, SAS, JMP, or Stata) is preferred WORKING ENVIRONMENT: • Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions• Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment• Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING STATEMENT: Emory NPRC in conjunction with Emory University conducts pre-employment screening for all positions which may include an INA and criminal background check, verification of work history, academic credentials, licenses, and certifications, drug screening, requirement of various vaccinations, and health assessment.
