Element Materials Technology is Hiring a GeoTechnical Driller Near St. Paul, MN

Overview

Element has an opportunity for Geotechnical Driller. The primary functions of the Geotechnical Driller is to safely perform soil test borings, obtain accurate logs and soil samples for laboratory analysis and engineering evaluations. Work is to be performed in accordance with established QA procedures in conducting Soil Test Borings, Soil Sampling/Classification, and Monitoring Well construction. We are offering a sign on bonus for this position and possible relocation assistance for qualified candidates. 

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and maintain our Central Mine Equipment (CME) drill rigs and related equipment in compliance with company and Department of Transportation (MNDOT) requirements. 
  • Accurately locate soil test boring locations using topographical maps and/or dimensioned site sketches. Determine ground surface elevations at the locations of soil borings using eye level measurement equipment from known site benchmark elevations.
  • Improve on site sketches provided or draw rough sketch of the site, including boring locations, buildings, sidewalks, streets, and curbs in dimensions that will result in a more accurate final drawing.
  • Determine if problems exist concerning locations, evaluations, soil conditions and/or existing site obstructions and/or utilities. Immediately notify appropriate personnel to determine how to proceed with the project, minimizing lost time.
  • Perform the boring operation according to company QA procedures and job specifications; take sample borings, record penetrations, classify the soil according to USCS, and maintain thorough and accurate records of operations.
  • Determine ground water levels in borings; perform rotary coring to obtain cores of bedrock.
  • Perform piezometer installations, in-place permeability/double ring infiltrometer tests, install slope indicator casings, and monitor well installations.
  • Assist with testing procedures to ensure accuracy and validation of results.
  • Partner with Project Managers in reporting results, ensuring accuracy of reports.
  • Ensure processes and procedures are performed in accordance with company procedures and regulatory agencies’ regulations.
  • Train/mentor junior drilling staff/driller helpers.

Skills / Qualifications

  • 3-5 years experience safely operating drilling equipment/trucks and working in drilling/soils related position.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle within Company policy. Valid Class A Drivers License required.
  • Experience in interpreting testing procedures and requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel)
  • Availability, flexibility, and maturity to represent the company at a broad range of events/projects in the community, with customers and within the company.
  • Ability to remain calm when faced with mounting pressure related to deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Well developed oral and written communication skills to meet a variety of communication needs.
  • Good interpersonal skills that foster open upward and downward communication built on mutual respect.
  • Ability to interface with clients, win new work and determine their requirements; helps develops proposals including cost estimates, work plan and terms and conditions.
  • Ability to travel up to 75% of the time; some overnight travel may be required.
  • Two years of technical/vocational training in related field or equivalent
  • Frequency of required physical force: Occasional (moderate).
  • Lifting requirements: lifting <50lbs often and >50lbs sporadically.
  • Ability to stand on feet for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs periodically.
  • Work is performed mainly outdoors
