Eaton County is Hiring a Network Administrator Near Charlotte, MI

Under the direction of the Technology Services Director, designs, implements, and administers one or more of the county's voice/data networks. Responsible for consulting with business leaders within their assigned operating division to plan, install, configure, and maintain technology solutions that support the organization's IT business needs. Provides training, troubleshooting, and support services to all users. Develops and maintains network schematics and monitors networks for optimum performance. Recommends to the Director any appropriate hardware and software requirements to ensure maximum availability of networks. Develops necessary documentation for networks including router configurations, firewalls, servers, security, backups, and any other applications. Serves as a team member who supports technology needs and is available to key business leaders and users on a 24 hour/day 7 day/week basis to support mission critical systems.

New employees, hired prior to January 31, 2023, will be eligible for a $1,500 recruiting stipend after 6 months of employment with the County.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience as determined by the Director and the Controller/Administrator within the defined salary range. 

  1. Responsible for the overall security, availability, and integrity of the county's networks.
  2. Designs, configures, implements and administers local area networks including servers (physical and virtual), storage, software, backups, and security.
  3. Monitors the operational health of all networks, servers, virus protection, backups in the county's data center(s). Performs analysis, troubleshoots problems and follows through to resolution using available resources such as network logs.
  4. Maintains standards for the county's wiring infrastructure, equipment, security, routing protocols, platforms, and applications.
  5. Participates as a primary resource in county hardware and software projects including, but not limited to, document imaging, Web/Intranet development, and IP telephony.
  6. Supports and administers third-party applications.
  7. Maintains DNS servers.
  8. Develops and maintains documentation of network infrastructure, operational and support procedures to the benefit of the IT department and end-users.
  9. Recommends to the Director appropriate hardware and software to insure acceptable performance and compatibility between all components.
  10. Provides primary or supplemental hardware and software support services for end-users, including hardware repairs.
  11. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director.
  12. Attends seminars and workshops, reads professional journals and otherwise stays abreast of changing technology.

Education: Bachelor's degree with knowledge, skills, and ability related to course work targeted towards computer science, computer networking, or related major. Equivalent experience or certification may be considered. Knowledge of Microsoft Operating Systems, Cisco routers/firewalls, and common desktop software applications like MS-Office and virus protection. Industry recognized technical certification as a Microsoft and/or Cisco certified network administrator is preferred but not required.
 
Experience: At least two to three years of experience working in a complex local area network environment with Microsoft Operating Systems, Linux, physical and virtual servers, storage area networks, and routers/firewalls. Previous experience with common desktop software applications like MS-Office and virus protection. Demonstrated ability to train users on network and related functions. 
 
Required Network Administrator Skills:
  1.  Proven experience in a network administrator role.
  2. Hands on experience in networking, routing, and switching.
  3. Excellent know of best practices around management, control, and monitoring of both physical/virtual server infrastructure.
  4. Experience with firewalls, Internet VPN's remote implementation, troubleshooting, and problem resolution is required.
  5. Ability to set up and configure server hardware.
  6. Proficient with backup and recovery software and methodologies.
  7. Manage Cisco phone system.
  8. Administer Cisco routers.
  9. Manage DNS.
  10. Manage domain controllers.
  11. ASA's.
  12. SSL generation
  13. Network performance tuning.
  14. LAN knowledge.
  15. Network design.
  16. Problem solving.
  17. Strategic planning.
Other Requirements:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize, effective time management, and take a proactive approach to improving network services.
  2. Proven experience in a network administrator role.
  3. Must be customer service oriented.
  4. Must be courteous and polite.
  5. Must be able to work under supervision and multi-task.
  6. Must be reliable.
  7. Must have valid driver's license.
