Overview
The Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) reports to the WTCC Fire Protection Manager. The FPE is responsible for assisting the WTCC Fire Protection Manager in the implementation of and compliance with fire protection
requirements applicable to commissioning, construction, maintenance, startup, and plant management activities of the Waste Treatment Plant.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Completing and maintaining training as identified in WTP Fire Protection Program (FPP).
- Implementation of fire protection program documents and tools.
- Maintain expert knowledge in the field of fire protection.
- Maintaining expertise in fire protection requirements and their associated implementing documents for Commissioning & Operations (C&O) activities.
- Assessing implementation and compliance, identifying and reporting fire protection program deficiencies to the Fire Protection Manager.
- Reviewing and understanding Fire Hazard Analysis for assigned facility/facilities.
- Reviewing and understanding of assigned facility/facilities active and passive fire protection features.
- Reviewing and understanding simplified process flow diagrams, system descriptions, system design descriptions, and facility design descriptions for assigned facility/facilities.
- Reviewing and understanding preliminary and final documented safety analysis for assigned facility/facilities.
- Performing facility assessments in accordance with WTP Fire Protection Facility Assessment schedule and procedure.
- Periodic reviewing and coordinating with Hanford Fire Department to maintain Pre-Fire Plans and familiarization tours.
- Performing and recording monthly facility fire protection inspections in accordance with inspection procedure.
- Meet NFPA 25 and NFPA 72 requirements for a “Qualified Person”.
- Providing technical expertise to operations and maintenance personnel in the implement of fire protection requirements.
- Performing and recording periodic inspections of designated Hot Work areas.
- Performing Technical Safety Requirements inspections, as necessary for assigned facility/facilities.
- Cross training to back-up other fire protection engineers in the implementation of FPP.
- Identifying and implementing actions to promote improvement and correct deficiencies in the implementation of the FFP.
- Assisting in the identification of fire protection attributes in the planning process to ensure work is accomplished in accordance with FPP requirements.
- Mentoring junior level engineers and technicians
- Developing and/or approving compensatory actions for impairments, deficiencies, and system restrictions in accordance with the impairment procedure.
- Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment.

Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, or a related discipline from an accredited university and 6 years of related experience. In lieu of a degree, high school diploma or GED and 12 years of related experience is required.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check which includes verification of employment and education. Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
- Experience in implementing DOE fire protection requirements (DOE O 420.1X).
- Ability to incorporate requirements into project implementing documents and in maintaining the documents in accordance to current source requirements.
- Intermediate knowledge of Access, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Requirements
- Possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
- Prior DOE, NRC, or Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program experience.
