Overview

We are currently searching for a Chemist provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the Chemistry and Synthesis Center (CSC) of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Division of Intramural Research (DIR). This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead research projects in synthetic chemistry.
• Maintain records.
• Perform synthesis and/or labeling of target specific molecules for imaging.
• Interact with chemists within CSC in the preparation and testing of synthesized probes.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts outside of CSC.
• Perform the total syntheses of target compounds.
• Produce compositions at desired scales and purities.
• Perform analytical validation and testing of compositions.
• Develop and present plans for novel syntheses and approaches to new compounds.
• Manage multiple projects at once.
• Perform repeat and partial syntheses as necessary.
• Develop and present plans for novel syntheses and approaches to new compounds.
• Produce compositions at desired scales and purities.
• Perform analytical validation and testing of compositions.
• Maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases.
• Perform analytical techniques; learn new skills as necessary.
• Gather, analyze, and interpret data; prepare summaries and reports.
• Make presentations of results and findings both inside and outside CSC.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new ideas and developments in the field.
• Guide and train junior staff members.
• Interact and collaborate with CSC staff members.
• Prepare and test synthesized probes.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
• Total synthesis of complex natural products or fluorogenic substrates must be demonstrated by scientific publications.
• Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
• Strong inter-personal and teamwork skills.
