Responsibilities:
TheReferral Responder role is responsible for maximizing the organ referral andevaluation process in collaboration with the Advisor on Call (AOC), OrganRecovery Coordinator (ORC), Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC), Donation andFamily Advocate (DFA), Referral and Donor Screening Services (RDSS), hospitalstaff, physicians, and medical director as needed. Initial intake, response to,and screening heart beating ventilated (HBV) referrals, assessing organ donorsuitability, and enhancing the donation process. Maintaining donor records,providing donor family support, electronic medical record entry, andcommunication in conjunction with donor family advocate services. Facilitatingfamily conversation regarding donation and obtaining informed consent, incollaboration with the ORC and DFA staff if available. This includescollaborating with hospital staff to determine appropriate timing for familycounseling and conversation.
Clinical Responsibilities
Initial referral intake and response of heart beat ventilated referrals:
The RR staff are responsible for responding to referrals in a prompt,professional manner that facilitates the evaluation of both the donor hospitaland DNA. Uses experience and knowledge to evaluate the referred patients forsuitability for organ, tissue, and eye donation in conjunction with the AOC,medical director, transplant centers, and RDSS. Ensures all medical and legal requirements will be met per hospital, CMS, andOPTN policies prior to organ recovery.
Facilitates brain death testing, ensuring hospital policies are followed.
Family approach and consent:
The RR ensures that the utmost care and support is being given to the potentialdonor and donor families. Ensuring the legal decision-maker is approached in anoptimal manner to make the donation decision based on complete informationprovided.
The RR works in conjunction with the AOC, ORC, ODC, DFA, and hospital staff todetermine the legal decision-maker. They evaluate family dynamics and ensurethat the legal decision maker is understanding of the potential donor's medicalstatus, terminal condition, and/or impeding neurological or cardiovasculardeath.
Office responsibilities/miscellaneous:
Attends monthly ORS meetings.
Up to date on all assigned SOPs and any assigned tasks.
Maintains any continuing educations units (CEUs) as applicable.
Other duties as assigned by ORS leadership.
Qualifications:
1-2years of experience as an EMT-P, LPN, RT, medical scribe, or previous OPOexperience
1 year experience with medical terminology
Must be available to work the night shift
PreferredEducation:
EMT-P, LPN or RT license
Associate or Bachelor's Degree or relevant medicalcertification
