Job Description
Salary Range: $25.53 - $34.47 Hourly
Hiring Ranges: $25.53 - $31.70 Hourly
Job Summary:
To safely operate and maintain the City of Greeley's raw water assets including reservoirs, ditches, and ponds as well as city equipment and other properties. The holder of this position may be required to live as an onsite caretaker for the operation of Milton Seaman Reservoir in a City-owned house.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills:
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment and make decisions with little supervision.
  • Proficient in operating a variety of equipment and tools.
  • Understanding of state rules and regulations related to dam safety and water administration.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting maps and blueprints.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) - two (2) years of automotive or equipment maintenance experience, or equivalent combination of related experience and education.
  • Specialized training or completion of certification program in a related field desired.
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
  • Must be able to possess and maintain a valid Class 'R' Colorado driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possess a Class A CDL with Air Brake or have the ability to obtain it within 120 days.
Safety Sensitive Requirements
  • This is a safety-sensitive job where an employee's direct action/inaction may lead to immediate harm to self, team, or the public. To promote safety, employees in this job must possess English proficiency adequate to effectively communicate with customers and coworkers, including proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
PREFERRED:
  • Experience operating and maintaining raw water systems such as irrigation ditches, reservoirs, and headgates.
  • Trade skills including concrete work, carpentry, chemical weed spraying, and welding.
  • Minimum of one year's experience performing heavy equipment operation duties.
  • Basic understanding of water watershed.
Essential Functions:
  • Answer questions from the public regarding City presence in high country, watershed, and reservoir areas.
  • Repair and maintain weirs, gates, and measurement devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment including tractor trailers, pickups, snowmobiles, and small gas-powered equipment.
  • Monitor high mountain reservoirs to ensure accurate calculation of water balances and compliance with regulations.
  • Perform dam inspections for public safety.
  • Track water rights stored in reservoirs and perform daily monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain equipment including loaders, backhoes, graders, track hoes, and snow removal equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures, making safety suggestions as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicate with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Respond to overtime work and emergency situations during inclement weather.
  • Monitor and record reservoir levels, conduct raw water sampling and measurements, and calculate flow rates.
  • Ensure maintenance of City's raw water assets and properties.
  • Participate in intergovernmental relationships and conduct snow surveys.
  • Make decisions independently and prioritize projects to enhance productivity.
  • Adapt field operations to inclement weather and safety concerns.
  • Complete necessary paperwork including timesheets, work orders, and reports.

  • The job frequently involves working outdoors at elevations of 9,000 ft or higher, which can lead to rapid changes in working conditions.
  • Work often takes place in severe weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • The job involves working around equipment, traffic, and materials that produce fumes, noise, dust, dirt, heat, vibration, and flying objects.
  • The work often involves potentially dangerous situations such as traffic, work zones, steep slopes, winter conditions, ditch banks, manholes, confined spaces, trenches, deep snow, driving on snow and ice-covered roads, etc.
  • The role requires responding to overtime work and after-hour calls, especially during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • The job frequently involves handling objects weighing up to 15 pounds, regularly handling objects weighing 30-50 pounds, and occasionally handling objects weighing 50-100 pounds in various positions, including above shoulder height.
  • The job requires moderate to considerable physical effort, including working from ladders in awkward positions and frequent use of light or medium-weight objects (25-50 lbs.) and tools.
    • Examples of tasks include digging out structures from several feet of snow, shoveling various types of materials, handling rip rap, breaking concrete with jackhammers, handling concrete forms, downed trees, tree stumps and branches, and inlet grates.
  • The job requires manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment, and to enter confined spaces safely and properly.
  • The role requires the strength and stamina to frequently shovel and rake asphalt during an 8-10-hour shift. Other tasks include hiking mountain trails with a loaded pack, concrete work, rip rapping, trimming trees, weed mowing, weed spraying, cleaning storm sewer inlets, etc.
  • The job involves moving equipment and/or materials safely over uneven surfaces and terrain.
  • The role requires sitting for long periods in vehicles or equipment (8-12-hour durations).
  • The job frequently involves sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, etc.
  • Vision and hearing abilities are required to operate a variety of light equipment in traffic and work zones.
  • Equipment used includes GPS, Loader, motor grader, backhoe, skid steer, Snowcat, Snowmobile, Bulldozer, Chainsaws, rollers, tractor with attachments, single/tandem axle dump trucks with trailer, two-way radio, computers, computerized/automated equipment controls, gas detection monitors, tripod and harness for confined space entry, and boat.
  • The job involves considerable hazards due to frequent exposure to unpredictable conditions that may lead to injury.
    • Examples of hazardous conditions include working at 9,000 ft in the winter, preparing for rapid weather changes, using caution when working on frozen lake or reservoir surfaces, working around heavy equipment on narrow dirt roads, being aware of surroundings during heavy equipment operations, and working in adverse weather conditions.
