 FUNCTION SUMMARY EH&S Specialist

The Polaris Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Specialist is responsible for supporting the EH&S Manager in the development, implementation, and management of the Polaris EH&S programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment. The Polaris EH&S programs must comply with the Federal, State, County, and City of Vacaville regulations covered but not limited to OSHA, Cal OSHA, YSAQMD, DTSC, CUPA, and the EPA. The EH&S Specialist will support the EH&S department for all regulatory body correspondence and on-site audits. In this role, the Specialist will provide training for safety and compliance on the required regulations to the Polaris employees and sub-contractors as required. The role is a “hands-on” position in which the Specialist will not only be implementing and maintaining the programs but will also be in the plant performing activities required to ensure safety and compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Promote a positive “can do” attitude and work ethic.
  • Assist developing and maintaining environmental compliance programs (e.g., air, hazardous materials, wastes, wastewater, stormwater), including written programs and procedures.
  • Assist developing and maintaining the safety programs to help ensure personnel safety and OSHA compliance.
  • Back-up to the EH&S Manager for leading the Safety Committee meetings and guide the monthly safety meetings.
  • Coordinate with all necessary departments on projects to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with managing the hazardous materials inventory logs, the Hazardous Material Business Plan/EPCRA reporting, and environmental compliance calendar.
  • Perform job hazards analysis for the various functions with the other departments for the high-risk functions.
  • Perform routine industrial and hazardous waste management activities, inspections, and recordkeeping.
  • Assist with managing, maintaining, and developing all permit applications for air, water, waste, and hazardous materials for current and new operations.
  • Provide a strong safety & environmental compliance presence in all areas of the facility.
  • Author, conduct/coordinate employee safety and environmental training as required.
  • Lean an environmental culture with a zero-event mentality.
  • Responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling environmental risks in the workplace.
  • Lead accident investigations and maintain regulatory reporting records by supporting accident investigations to uncover root cause and track corrective actions to completion.
  • Coordinate environmental testing including wastewater, stormwater, and waste characterization.
  • Interface with regulatory officials and contractors, as required.
  • Issue purchase order request to support the EH&S and cGMP Janitorial responsibilities.
  • Other tasks and duties may be assigned.

 Education & Experience

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or engineering preferred.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in EH&S field.
  • Experience in a CGMP Manufacturing Facility preferred.
  • HAZWOPER certification preferred.
  • Technical knowledge of local, county, state, and federal regulations administered by the following agencies: USEPA, DTSC, Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District, Central Valley RWQCB, OSHA, Cal-OSHA, City of Vacaville Publicly Owned Treatment Works, and other applicable local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Strong PC Literacy with advance skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint desired.
  • Position requires exceptional organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Self-starter with a commitment to follow through, projecting enthusiasm with a desire to motivate others.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and auditing skills preferred.
