DC Department of Human Resources is Hiring an Education specialist Near Washington, DC

General Job Information

Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Prevention Services Unit and the Oasis Program.

The mission of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) is to give court-involved youth the opportunity to become more productive citizens by building on the strengths of youths and their families in the least restrictive, most homelike environment consistent with public safety.

The Oasis Program focuses on youth between the ages of 10-17 who are at risk of becoming system involved.

The incumbent serves as an Education Services Specialist responsible for providing comprehensive support to the Oasis team and leading new initiatives to contribute to the educational and outdoor education services provided for an intensive program aimed at a focused cohort of youth who are either system-involved or at risk of system involvement in which they would receive community-based services and support tailored to their needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Education Services Specialist develops, implements, and supports DYRS' educational development services programs for the Oasis Program through the design and delivery of training and organizational development interventions with particular emphasis on youth development, outdoor education, workforce development education, and other activities that are specific to the treatment of youth.

Conducts comprehensive analyses to identify the educational needs of the youth, utilizing data and feedback to inform their strategies.

Works collaboratively with a dedicated team to address those needs effectively, ensuring that each youth receives the appropriate support and resources required for their development and success in the program.

Plans and carries out various workforce development and outdoor educational activities for youth participating in the Oasis Program, managing, leading, and administering educational projects, operations, or activities that relate specifically to outdoor educational services aimed at the ongoing educational development of youth within the program.

The Incumbent provides technical advice in relevant subject matter areas, which is crucial for effectively executing the program’s objectives.

Monitors programs and projects, ensuring they remain on track to meet program goals while also maintaining or updating data, records, and other pertinent information essential for program evaluation.

Conducts proactive outreach to youth who have left or dropped out of school, reaching out to parents or guardians as needed to foster a supportive environment.

Develops trusting relationships with youth and identifies specific issues impacting youth engagement in school and academic performance.

Monitors student academic progress, attendance, and behavior for at least one year, maintaining accurate case management records of youth background and program participation.

Coordinates with community service providers and District agencies to secure potential client referrals and supportive services, ensuring effective information sharing to enhance service coordination for shared clients.

Qualifications and Education :

A degree that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the position to be filled.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

A current / valid driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions / Environment

The incumbent works primarily in an office and outdoor setting and work is typically sedentary; however, there may be some walking;

standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile.

Other Significant Facts :

Tour of Duty : Monday-Friday;8 : 15AM - 4 : 45PM (This position will be based out in Laurel MD. Work will include weekends and some overnights.)

Pay Plan, Series and Grade : CS-1740-12

Promotion Potential : No Known Promotion Potential

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union) : This position is not a part of a Collective Bargaining Unit.

Position Designation : The incumbent in this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel regulations, Suitability.

This position has been designated as a protection-sensitive position.
