General Summary: Responsible for performing a variety of duties depending on location and availability of other facility staff. They may be involved in both the clinical and administrative areas including assisting Physicians/NPs/PAs with patient care and handling clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Collects and provides information to patients/families/facility staff so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinicians clinical services. Searches and collects information from other sources and documents information within an electronic medical record. Position may also be responsible for assembling patient information into patients’ medical charts/records in accurate and complete manner. Position responsibilities vary by size of medical practice and type of technology used such as electronic medical records versus manual files. May be assigned to a specific clinician team.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists Physicians/PAs/NPs/nurses with various procedures; charting; electronic medical record entry; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information. Will also travel to assigned facilities. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; identifying and accompanying patients to patient room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines;
  • Will regularly interact with a panel of patients/families and collect data in an electronic medical record. Communicate clinical concerns to patient’s clinician and confirm appropriate scheduling and follow up.
  • Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions; scheduling appointments; collecting insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating charts/EMR to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.
  • Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
  • Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities that vary according to state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, checking vital signs; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; prescription verifications with physician’s orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices;
    • Laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; 
  • Reviews patients’ health information including patient encounters.
  • Checks to ensure all components are completed, properly identified, signed and that all necessary information is ready for input in the appropriate systems in a timely manner.
  • Communicates as needed with physicians and other health care professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information prior to entering.
  • Properly transposes required data into the assigned system from the electronic medical record.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college. Appropriate certificate indicating passing grade for specific specialty if working in specialty department; e.g., pediatric medical assistant exam.

Experience: Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a similar setting as described.

Other Requirements: Current documentation of a national certification for the registered medical assistant (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or for the certified assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Must possess a current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (hepatitis B and tuberculosis).
