The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department will be clinically competent while delivering care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, interventions, implementation and evaluation. The RN will effectively interact with patients and other health care team members while maintaining all standards of professional nursing. A key aspect of the work of nursing is to continually improve the quality of nursing care by collecting and analyzing data. The RN works in a team environment with the following but not limited to: Providers and Emergency Medical Technicians. The ED RN reports to the Emergency Department Clinical Director. 

Job Functions:

  • Provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific principles.
  • Conducts assessments and reassessments on all patients per policy/condition warrants, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Assesses hemodynamic status and recognize abnormalities.
  • Identifies cardiac dysrhythmias and treat appropriately as directed by the physician.
  • Assists in relevant health teaching for patient and family.
  • Shares responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.
  • Prepares, administers, and records medications in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a registered nurse.
  • Participates in appropriate emergency care.
  • Records information concisely, accurately and completely according to facility policy.
  • Assists in the orientation of new personnel/acts as preceptor when requested.
  • Demonstrates awareness, understanding and respect of cultural diversity and patients of all ages and socioeconomic groups.
  • Direct or oversee less-experienced nursing or healthcare personnel.
  • Prepare patients for and assist with examinations or treatments. 
  • Assess the needs of individuals, families, or communities, including assessment of individuals’ home or work environments, to identify potential health or safety problems.
  • Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, or supplies and ensure that stock of supplies is maintained. 
  • Must demonstrate strong IV skills and critical thinking skills with the ability to be flexible and organized while handling stressful situations. 
  • Maintain the integrity of highly confidential business and patient information.
  • Display and promote high standards of ethical conduct and behaviors consistent with organizational standards.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly and effectively convey information to patients.
  • Anticipate, understand, and manage patient expectations and provide consistent delivery of services.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and handle multiple tasks/projects concurrently.
  • Ability to consistently carry out job responsibilities, able to acknowledge when commitments are not met, and take appropriate steps to fulfill responsibility.

Requirements

Education

  • Associate’s Degree (two year college or technical school) Required, Field of Study: Nursing
  • Bachelor’s Degree (four year college) Preferred, Field of Study: Nursing 

Experience

  • Six months experience in medical/surgical or critical care nursing preferred.

Computer Skills

  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Epic experience preferred

Other Requirements 

  • BLS and ACLS required 
  • TNCC or ATCN and ENPC or PALS completed within 1 year of being signed off as orientated to the ED.
