What you will be doing: 

Crisis Text Line's software engineers develop the next-generation data platform that changes how millions of humans connect with volunteer crisis counselors, our clinical staff and the interaction with one another. Our platform needs to handle information at a massive scale and extend well beyond SMS as a channel. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design, and mobile.

As a director of engineering, you will lead specific projects and teams critical to Crisis Text Line's needs with opportunities to grow teams and projects as you and the mental health space grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities, and be enthusiastic about taking on new problems across the full stack as we continue to push technology forward.

  • As a Director of Engineering you will managing a large global team of engineers and will be responsible for the product development, delivery, and operational support of our digital products spanning multiple platforms including Web, Mobile, Salesforce, and text-based channels (SMS, chat, Whatsapp and others)
  • You will be responsible for defining the overall technical architecture at the product level and will lead that design across individual features
  • Work with product owners to map product requirements to high quality, sustainable technical solutions and constantly collaborate with other technical leads across the organization to ensure solutions are built in a compatible, consistent manner
  • “Roll up your sleeves” and collaborate directly with engineers to create high-quality features and functionality that are architected for both scalability and maintainability
  • Manage and mentor engineers to help them grow

What you bring to the table:

  • You possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • You have 8 years of experience with full stack development, across back-end such as Go, Java, Python, and/or C codebases, and front-end experience including JavaScript and/or TypeScript, HTML, CSS or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading engineering teams and setting technical direction.
  • 5 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, and/or cross-business projects.
  • You are able to function well across diverse groups and integrate diverse views into daily work.
  • You integrate baseline knowledge of cultural awareness.

Salary Range: $146,000-$205,000
This range is provided by Crisis Text Line. Your actual pay will be based on your skills, experience, location, and applicable law (such as local minimum wage laws). We pay competitively in the tech-forward nonprofit space and offer a robust benefits package.
