We are looking for a Vice President, Finance to join our team!
This position directs and oversees the financial activities of the organization and is responsible for preparation of financial reports and summaries, creation of forecasts as well as oversight of the Accounting department, budget preparation, and audit functions.
Background:
CPC is a non-profit entity affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Its mission is focused on clinical research to improve care for patients and direct community health engagement. By nature of its activities, strong candidates for finance leadership should have experience in:
- Clinical trial coordinating center budgets and site budget negotiations
- Grant funding (e.g. NIH, AHA, state grants)
- Non-profit accounting and reporting
Responsibilities:
Strategy, Planning and Management
- Assume primary responsibilities for financial strategic planning and accountability that reflects the market and helps the organization to thrive in a highly competitive environment.
- Evaluate and monitor a risk management policy including operations, systems, legal, contracting, and applicable regulatory components.
- Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the company’s plan for academic output, growth, expansion as well as sustainability.
- Assess and evaluate financial performance of the organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts.
- Participate as an active member of the CPC Leadership Committee (LC) and help to define overall strategic goals for the organization.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and LC on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis/ projections.
- Serve as key liaison on the CPC Board of Directors Finance Committee to present financial information and reports to this committee. Represent financial reports and discussion with the CPC Board of Directors regarding all financial and business-related activities.
- Serve on the CPC Board of Directors Investment Committee.
- Provide regular updates to the LC related to finance as well as business operations/infrastructure activities.
- Oversee all finance and IT/IS related procedures, processes, and administration, and recommend improvements to existing systems.
- Evaluate departments and make suggestions for automating processes and increasing working efficiency.
- Work with Department Heads to implement Policies, SOPs and WIs as applicable.
- Maintain outstanding strategic alliances with sponsors, vendors, and business partners.
Financial Management
- Ensure adequate controls are in place and that substantiating documentation is approved and available such that all expenditures may pass independent and governmental audits.
- Review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls, compliance and financial procedures.
- Utilize forward-looking models and activity-based analyses to provide financial oversight into the organization’s plans, forecasts and operating budgets.
- Enhance, implement and maintain integrated financial and accounting systems, processes, tools and control systems.
- Oversee CPC annual budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics, variance analysis both internally and externally.
- Manage cash flow and investments per the investment policy.
- Oversee review, analyze and present monthly financial budgeting reports; monthly profit and loss by project and forecast vs. budget by project and provide recommendations to the LC.
Contract Management and Business Development
- Collaborate with contract and legal departments in the construction, documentation and negotiations of agreements.
- Oversee the leadership of budget review and negotiations with clinical trial sites.
- Provide leadership in the financial and technical aspects for business development activities, including ownership and overall responsibility for budget development for potential clinical trials, Endpoint and Specialty Services (ESS) and faculty engagements.
- Ensure that CPC’s best interests are reflected in all contractual/legal agreements.
- Provide leadership support for development of philanthropic and fundraising initiatives that support the organization’s academic and scientific mission.
Informatics (IT/IS)
- Provide executive oversight of the Informatics team to ensure that all IT/IS decisions support the security and safety of CPC.
- Strategize with the Head of Informatics, Executive Director and other members of the leadership team regarding current technological infrastructure, identify gaps, enhancements and oversee implementations as needed.
- Provide executive leadership for development and enhancement of enterprise data strategy, along with continuous improvement of business intelligence for decision support and organization-wide analytics.
- Ensure that IT/IS processes and procedures provide optimal efficiencies and support of CPC.
Team Management
- Supervise and evaluate performance of all staff reporting to this position.
- Engage other members of the LC to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all solutions positively support CPC’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
- Mentor managers and/or directors, manage work allocation, systems training, and the building of an effective and efficient team dynamic.
Qualifications:
- MBA and/or CPA highly desirable.
- Experience in the regulated (e.g., FDA) pharmaceutical, medical device or biologic industry is strongly preferred.
- 10 years of progressive responsibility in finance, operations or accounting.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, confidence and executive presence as well as ability to motivate staff.
- Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
- Passion for the organization’s mission and values is essential.
- Experience overseeing IT staff. Systems implementation experience preferred.
- Strong commitment to developing team members.
- Significant experience working with external financial auditors, internal controls and compliance related issues.
- Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending financial and technology policies and procedures.
- A hands-on approach with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
- Effective communication and presentation skills.
- Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Sunshine Act reporting, and audit best practices; and state, federal and local law regarding company operations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office and other relevant software products (e.g. Dynamics SL).
Targeted Compensation: $180,000 – $225,000 annually
