County of Roanoke Virginia is Hiring a GIS Specialist Near Roanoke, VA

Provides Geographic Information System (GIS) and Management Information support for the Department of Development Services. Manages the Cityworks software and GIS systems, primarily for the Stormwater Management Division, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the MS4 permitting compliance process. Interacts with the County’s Information Technology Division of the CommIT Department to resolve technical issues and obtain Enterprise Level assistance, when needed. Interacts with other staff members in the Department of Development Services to coordinate project and program issues. Primarily performs routine work independently. Performs related duties as required.
Salary Depends on Qualifications
  • Manages, updates, and troubleshoots Cityworks in order to increase the efficiency of the Stormwater inspectors and provides technical support to Cityworks users.
  • Manages and updates Department’s GIS systems in order to provide the most recent information to the employees and citizens.
  • Manages GIS data for the MS4 permit in order to meet DEQ requirements.
  • Researches and adds/corrects GIS data in order to complete the pipe ownership project, a long term County-wide mapping project of the Stormwater drainage system and related easements.
  • Uses Department’s GIS to develop maps, information tables, and other documents in order to provide data visualization tools to staff, regulatory agencies, and citizens.
  • Saves third-party inspection reports to the storage drive.
  • Mails thirty-party failed BMP inspection reports and notice of inspection letters to the property’s responsible party.
  • Compiles data from Cityworks and GIS needed for the MS4 Annual Report.
  • Serves as the Department’s liaison with IT’s GIS division
  • Provides training to other employees, as appropriate
Education
Required: Bachelor’s degree in GIS, information technology, civil engineering, geography, or related field.
Experience
Required: At least one year related experience and/or training
using ArcGIS Suite of Software Products and SQL or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred: Experience with Cityworks
Certifications/ Licenses Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Knowledge of and experience using ArcGIS suite
• Knowledge of and experience using SQL
• Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office suite
• Knowledge of and experience using Cityworks Suite
• Knowledge of and experience with workflow diagrams
• Knowledge of and experience in reading site plans and as-built construction drawings
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and staff
• Ability to take ownership of tasks and accomplish assigned activities with limited oversight
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Some knowledge of stormwater management principles
• Ability to manage and analyze data and develop GIS reports and processes
Additional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
