Safety Manager

JOB TITLE: Manager, Transportation Safety

Primary Purpose

This position directs the transportation safety management process and provides overall support and guidance to the local transportation operations organizations. The Manager coordinates with the Corporate Safety & Risk Department as well as The GM & Transportation Operations leadership in crafting both short and long term strategies in building a culture of safety within the Transportation organization. The Manager introduces and oversees systems and activities to maintain oversight of regulatory compliance status; provides training and professional development for management and CMV operators; coordinates and manages the crash management process; conducts audits and inspections of the transportation safety management process; and monitors metrics and indices reflecting performance.

Scope

Reporting to the Corporate Safety & Risk Department as well as The GM provides support, direction and guidance to regional transportation leadership across multiple owned companies and locations in a multi-platform fleet comprised of private and outsourced drivers. The Manager interacts with and directly influences the behavior, performance, and knowledge base of the private fleet CMV operators; and serves in a consulting role enabling regional, area and local managers to address safety & regulatory issues impacting the transportation operations organization.

Key Responsibilities – Safety Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations regarding transportation and workplace safety.

  • Monitoring driver qualification files and the hiring and selection process
  • Reviewing hours of service XRS/ELD records for accuracy
  • Assuring DOT drug / alcohol program is compliant with regulations
  • Work with maintenance to assure compliance and demand maintenance are compliant
  • Facilitate Orientation
  • Complete all established reports in detailed manner (Claims, OSHA, DOT, Company, Safety etc.)
  • Follow up on all claims and work to completion
  • Maintain constant communication with Company Managers, Corporate Safety & Risk and GM

Overseeing and implementing the elements of a Crash Management process including coordination of reporting, investigation, documentation, and management of incidents

  • Prepare and Review accident file contents for accuracy and documents needed
  • Gatekeeper for accident preventable decisions
  • Assure proper accountability is delivered for preventable accidents
  • Provide a comprehensive & accurate monthly report containing appropriate metrics

Developing materials and conducting training for drivers in the implementation of the Transportation Safety Management System

  • Assure driver training is continually updated and Safety guide are implemented for every active driver
  • Assure vehicle inspection hands on training is completed with every active driver
  • Assure load securement training is completed with every active driver
  • Assure all active drivers are trained in proper mirror placement principles
  • Assure all active drivers are trained in close quarter maneuvering principles

These responsibilities should only serve as an indicator of some of the duties that will be assigned to this position and should not be considered all- inclusive as job duties will continually change with the company, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Hiring Requirements:

  • 10 years risk management or safety department experience in the trucking industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal and State DOT, Health & Safety Trucking Regulations, especially the DOT’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Hazardous Materials Regulations, Drug & Alcohol Regulations (including Parts 40, 199, & 382), including a working knowledge of the DOT Letters of Interpretation and other Regulatory Guidance
  • Strong leadership and organization, with the ability to direct and achieve priorities, goals, and strategies with limited supervision.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products including (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Windows.
  • Must have strong communication skills both verbal and written.

Qualities: Outstanding work ethic, able to prioritize, well organized, professional strong problem-solving skills, dedicated, honest, team player, embrace and manage change, self-driven with minimal supervision. Must be able to make quick decisions and use independent judgement

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
