Job Summary

Do you enjoy working with plants and maintaining irrigation systems in a fast-paced environment? The City of Fort Collins Parks Department is filling a vacancy for a Technician I, Parks. This position is responsible for performing all aspects of public landscape maintenance including irrigation installation, diagnosis and repair as well as plant heath care, mulching, herbicide application and weeding.
This position will work on the Streetscapes team that includes two additional technicians and several hourly staff to maintain medians on arterial roads that have been enhanced with improved landscape designs. This work environment involves the active use of contracted and in-house traffic control operations to ensure a safe working environment when working on the medians. This position requires a high degree of coordination with team members and situational awareness. Team members are expected to follow all safety rules and regulations on the job site; duties may vary according to job assignment.
Relevant experience for this position can come from at least three (3) years of experience in parks, landscapes, horticulture, or farming environments. Background work in landscaping or irrigation is very helpful. Work hours are typically weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (winter) or from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM (spring and summer) with some time adjustment throughout the seasons and occasional weekends. 4–10-hour days are a possibility during spring and summer seasons. Perks include a great team to work with and on-the-job skill building. 
Work carried out by the Technician I, Parks requires certifications, licenses, and specialized training. A valid driver's license is required, while the following can be acquired after you start the job: 
- Colorado Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to acquire this license within 12 months of hire date.
- Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to acquire it within 12 months of hire date; the Parks Department will provide training, testing, and payment at the City's expense. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Performs skills associated with accepted maintenance practices including but not limited to municipal parks, golf courses and cemeteries.
  • Cleans and repairs grounds, restrooms, facilities, playgrounds, shelters, etc.
  • Maintains landscape areas including paver/brick repairs, hard/soft surface trails, cleaning and litter control; maintains, repairs, and tests water features.
  • Prepares and renovates playing fields and courts for recreational use.
  • Performs snow removal duties.
  • Safely operates and maintains medium to heavy-duty motor vehicles and specialized industry-related equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs irrigation and pumping systems.
  • Provides direction and supervision to hourly and contractual employees.
  • Coordinates activities with volunteer groups and community partnerships.
  • Responsible for adhering to, and being an example of, following proper safety rules and regulations.
  • Manages a flexible work schedule including hours of the day, weekends, holidays, and participates in on call rotation, if applicable.
  • Utilizes Integrated Pest Management approach and applies pesticide, herbicide and fertilizer as appropriate.
  • Availability to assist with special events, rentals and special projects as required.
  • Performs technical horticulture by designing, installing and maintaining flowers, containers, and planting beds containing trees, shrubs and perennials.
