Media Relations Manager Cooley is seeking a Media Relations Manager to join the Marketing & Business Development team. Position summary: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Communications, the Media Relations Manager will join in a new era of enhanced media relations across all of our business and litigation activities and will be part of a growing specialist PR and media relations team. The position will include people management, guidance and mentorship to our more junior team members across the full communications team. The Media Relations Manager will develop a strong relationship with the respective departmental leadership teams and be part of a dedicated team collaborating with Cooley partners across a rapidly transforming traditional and digital media landscape where both the means and the types of content and media are in flux. The Media Relations Manager will be part of a highly collaborative and supportive team helping to take Cooley to the next level of distinction as an elite but inclusive law firm. Proven media relations, and substantive project management and writing skills are critical to success in this role. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Position responsibilities: Work closely with departmental leadership and select practice group leaders and marketers to help implement PR programs and opportunities supporting the respective business development objectives, including innovative opportunities to build brand, strengthen journalist relationships and further protect and enhance Cooley’s reputation Assume communications project leadership responsibility for external-facing thought leadership initiatives tied to specific practices Act as a liaison between the broader communications and practice-group marketing teams to funnel information efficiently, and deploy initiative in seeking out new themes, media and opportunities for innovative external communications Support a thoughtful, consistent approach regarding Cooley’s accolades and ROI Partner with Cooley’s practice-group marketing team on communications initiatives, guidelines, standards and policies Ensure that the firm’s highest editorial standards are consistently maintained Liaise with Cooley's PR firms (US, UK and Asia) to enable seamless flow of information, logistical planning, and positioning to optimize timely sharing of achievements and comment Help review and approve practice-specific content, including but not limited to external and internal announcements, messaging and digest content Work on tight deadlines with multiple groups to gain time-sensitive approval on announcements and opportunities to raise awareness of Cooley for external audiences Lead and guide more junior team members Earn and maintain responsibility and respect as a trusted go-to professional by the partners and firm management All other duties as assigned or required Skills and experience: Required: 5 years prior experience in a marketing or communications-related field Experience in a law firm or professional services environment, with a working knowledge of professional services sectors Knowledge of the technology and life sciences sectors, as well as broad legal profession and law firm market experience Project management skills Adept at new and rapidly transforming technologies, especially in media and social media monitoring and analysis Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business or related field Familiarity with video production Supervisory experience Competencies: Ability to lead multiple projects and work with little direction in a highly collaborative environment Excellent communication skills both written and verbal Comprehensive, accurate note-taking and excellent proofreading skills Ability to multi-task, problem-solve, work well under pressure and coordinate sophisticated communications programs with good results Ability to consistently meet deadlines, including self-set and multi-tasked Assertive, but flexible as to style; must be able to handle stressful situations and interact with various personalities and communication styles at all levels in the firm Strong analytic and research skills Exhibit high energy and genuine enthusiasm for law firm communications activities and goals while maintaining a healthy, competitive spirit Experience in earning the trust and respect of high-performing senior professionals in a fast-paced environment Ability to develop professional relationships both internally (with department members, lawyers and firm staff) and externally (with industry/regional associations, etc.) Reliable and punctual Cooley offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits package EOE Pursuant to the Colorado Equal Pay For Equal Work Act, please find the compensation range specific to this role if based in CO, as well as a description of bonus and benefits generally applicable across all US offices. Colorado pay range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on skillset and experience - $120,000 - $150,000 annually. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus. Employees in this role will have the option to elect various benefits, including medical, dental, vision, accidental death and dismemberment, life insurance, dependent life insurance, long term disability, long-term care insurance, health savings accounts (if enrolled in an HDHP), health/dependent care spending accounts, 401(k) and profit sharing.
