Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Job Description

Reports To: Physician Owner

Job Summary:

Performs physical exams, procedures and treatments; takes patient histories, complaints and vital signs; orders tests; collects and prepares specimens; makes diagnoses; administers medications and injections; records data in patient charts; develops treatment plans and adjusts as needed; instructs and educates patients; reviews lab and diagnostic test results; maintains required logs; answers patient medical questions and ensures patient consents are signed prior to treatment.

Job Qualification Requirements:

  • Education: Must have completed an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program and be currently certified and licensed by the State of California.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 years of experience in a health care environment (internal medicine preferred).
  • Additional Requirements: Must be bilingual in English and Spanish. Must have a neat appearance and be patient, courteous and tactful with patients. Must understand the need for discretion and confidentiality in matters relating to patients and their problems. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to work independently and efficiently and serve and protect the practice by adhering to professional standards and established office policies/procedures.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology and CPT and ICD-10 coding. Computer literacy including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs preferred. General Knowledge of EMR systems. Current CPR certificate required.
  • Contacts: Must be able to effectively communicate and relate well with patients, physicians and office staff. Must be able to interact with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be mentally alert and in good physical health. Must be able to lift patients when required and must not have any pre-existing injury to back, shoulders, legs, etc. which could be re-injured when moving patients. Must have a willingness to accurately follow directions from physicians.
  • Work Environment: Ability to work in a sometimes stressful environment. May have exposure to blood and bodily fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, biohazards, toxic or poisonous substances. Must be able to work according to the office schedule which may periodically require working past the normal afternoon quitting time.
