Department of Public Safety

Hourly Wage: $30.56/Regular/Full-Time

Responsible for facility security and sanitation as well as training and evaluation of Corrections Officers on a daily basis. Assist the Correctional Administrator to ensure that all facets of the Corrections Division are being met in a legal, humane, impartial, and secure manner. Maintains set standards for security, carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Serves as Administrative Officer in charge of Corrections Sergeants.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety organizational chart and established chain of command.
  • Provide guidance to corrections staff to resolve critical adjustment problems relying upon his/her knowledge and extensive experience.
  • Receives direction form the Captain and exercises authority over the facilities, personnel, and the activities on the assigned shift.
  • May assume command of the Corrections Division when so ordered by superiors.
  • Reviews or performs staff scheduling to ensure appropriate security at the facilities on all posts.
  • Review staff reports, ensures investigation of resident incidents, determining causes and resolves problems following established policies & procedures.
  • Monitor facility operations on a regular basis to maintain safety and security of inmates and staff.
  • Reviews jail facility programs and operations to assure compliance with federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations and guidelines related to jail facility standards and operations.
  • Plans, organizes and directs detention and corrections operations on a shift, which includes: corrections and institutional services, inmate supervision, security, discipline and recreation. Deployment of personnel in emergency situations, classification of inmates for housing assignments, supervision of inmate work programs and legal processes for booking, court appearances and release, maintenance of facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  • Develops, reviews, and implements detention facility policies and practices which are consistent with the facilities goals and operational needs, identifies and resolves administrative and operational problems within the division related to facilities, programs, services, procedures, forms, work flow, and equipment through research, analysis, and evaluation.
  • Reviews operations and procedures information on a regular basis to ensure all is current pursuant to post orders. Standard Operating Procedures manual, program directives, and staff meetings.
  • Participates in the selection and training of staff; assigns and directs shift scheduling and relief coverage, coordinates employee orientation and training, supervises and evaluates staff, and recommends corrective or disciplinary action for subordinates. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring employees, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Prepares or reviews a variety of narrative and statistical reports related to inmate population and characteristics, workload activities, program and facility operations, staff utilization, service provision, and related subjects. Prepare incident reports, minor work orders, memos, and accident/injury reports.
  • May be assigned new projects and tasks not included on the description, or to assist other Public Safety staff as requested by supervisor ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge, in general, of Federal & Tribal Laws.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify narcotics and narcotic paraphernalia.
  • Knowledge of general principles and practices of jail management.
  • Skill in use of computer, 2 way radio, telephone, security video cameras, fax machine, fire alarm system.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in urgent decision affecting life, well-being, civil liberties, and property.
  • Ability to recognize unusual and abnormal situation and act in accordance with existing policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Ability to successfully complete scheduled and required training relative to position.
  • Ability to adhere to high standards of personal conduct on and off the job.
  • Ability to maintain alertness mentally and 100% physical fitness.
  • Ability and capability to quickly react to any emergency situation (escape, riot, etc)
  • Ability to apply basic counseling to influence positive attitudes and behavior of inmates.
  • Ability to work with all types of inmates in a firm and fair manner including those with emotional disorders and disruptive behavior patterns.
  • Ability to handle stress and exposure to potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of program and client information.
  • Ability to communicate courteously, tactfully, and effectively.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work as a team member as well as independently and productively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to be reliable, dependable, and trustworthy.
  • Ability to understand and follow established chain of command.
  • Ability to maintain inspections for facility and vehicles.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 10 years work experience in law enforcement and/or a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standards listed above. Must have completed the BASIC correctional training program at the time of hire.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid WA State Driver's License with ability to obtain a tribal driver's permit.
  • Required to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Required to successfully complete mandatory training for First Level Supervisor Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Required to maintain food handlers and basic first aid and CPR card current.
  • Required to wear a department uniform.
  • Required to take an annual physical and PEB training.
  • Required to utilize Spillman FLEX, an on-premises public safety software system.
  • Must be able to type/keyboard a minimum of 35 words per minute (WPM).
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts when needed.
  • Must be willing to attend and successfully complete mandatory training.
  • Must understand the position and working conditions and consider the impact on personal life-style and family.
  • Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
  • Yakama enrolled preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
