CommunityAmerica Credit Union is Hiring a Legal Specialist Near Lenexa, KS

Summary

Provides broad legal support for the credit union, including processing court orders (e.g. garnishments), legal correspondence and document production requests (e.g. subpoenas), general correspondence with opposing counsel, current and former members, and other parties engaged in disputes and other legal actions adverse to the credit union. Provides guidance to credit union employees on legal and regulatory matters, including proper handling of special accounts, contracts, policies and procedures, and other matters necessary for the safe and sound operation of the credit union.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Produces written correspondence to credit union employees and members, law enforcement, and courts on a variety of legal matters;
  • Processes properly served consumer and commercial garnishment requests, and places holds on member accounts as appropriate;
  • Ensures timely payment of held funds and completes responses as required by court order;
  • Reviews and responds to subpoenas and document production requests from law firms, and other agencies, including state and federal law enforcement;
  • Reviews and approves simple Powers of Attorney;
  • Researches and responds to front line inquiries on legal matters;
  • Reviews and distributes incoming legal related correspondence, as needed;
  • Initiates requests for due diligence for the credit union’s low and moderate risk vendors and tracks progress;
  • Assists with inputting contract-related information into the credit union’s contract management software to be used for tracking and reporting;
  • Gathers monthly member escalations data for reporting and trend analysis;
  • Communicates professionally and effectively with members, employees, local court officials and attorneys as needed;
  • Works with other credit union departments to ensure the workflow or process is providing the best service to the members;
  • Provides on-site training to management and front-line staff as appropriate;
  • Maintains the database of legal correspondence requests, their disposition, and provides periodic reports of results to management;
  • Promotes honest and open communication throughout the credit union; and
  • Provides notarial acts to credit union employees as needed;

Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma required 
  • At least one year of experience in a credit union, bank, or non-bank consumer financial services company
  • At least one year of experience in a law firm, corporate law department, government law department, or similar experience in the legal profession preferred 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Legal analysis skills, such as application of law to a set of facts or circumstances
  • Basic understanding of attorney-client privilege, attorney work product, and certain evidentiary concepts, such as duty to preserve evidence in a dispute
  • Ability to write concise, accurate, and advocacy-based correspondence
  • Function autonomously in a matrixed corporate environment
  • Proficiency with credit union technology applications (e.g. Fiserv DNA, Salesforce)
  • Ability to produce high quality work on a deadline
  • Flexibility to work independently as well as with others as needed
  • Knowledge of credit union services and products
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to resolve interpersonal conflict and miscommunication
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations in a calm, objective manner
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (primarily Outlook, Excel and Word)
  • Ability to hold sensitive information in confidence
  • Ability to be bonded

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Vendor Management knowledge / experience
  • Special Account knowledge / experience (e.g. Estates, Trusts, Other Fiduciary Roles)
  • Knowledge of garnishment and subpoena laws and regulations
  • 4-year college degree
  • Paralegal certificate
  • KS Notary Public
