Community Nursing Services, “CNS” is the 2nd largest homecare company in the State. CNS is a Non-profit company owned by the multi-$B, for-profit University of Utah Medical System. CNS started in 1928 as a group of Salt Lake City society ladies who decided they wanted to do something to take better care of those in need. They established the Salt Lake City Visiting Nurse Service to provide nursing care for sick people in their homes as an alternative to hospitalization. Today, almost 100 years later, the organization they founded is still providing medical services for people in their homes.
It is now known as Community Nursing Services and is the largest not-for-profit independent home health agency in Utah. The agency's many offices enable it to reach 90% of the state's population. The organization provides care to 20,000 people each year. Community Nursing Services offers nursing care, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy rehabilitation, has a home health infusion pharmacy, provides immunizations, hospice care, respiratory therapy, and has a program to provide health care for children with life-threatening diseases. Something unique about CNS is that their IV pharmacy enables those who need medicines administered intravenously to have them at home as opposed to going into a hospital outpatient clinic. Most other home health organizations don't offer home IV pharmacy services. Currently they have 500 employees.
